It's a red kind of spark, if you've seen the heavy indicator, the golden one, it's the same exact thing but large and red. It teaches you about it in the new tutorial as well if you want to check it out.
Also, all of those interrupts that you mention in trials have that red spark indicator.
Example:

Hmm? I'm talking the ones that are in a circular pattern around the spriggan npc, not the lines on the ground in front of the horavor. Ground Based AoE damage indicators are just that, indicators. but the circularly structured lines leading into the spriggan indicate an NPC ability that can be bashed.

Ahhhhhhh. I see the issue, and I've learned something as well. You've likely got the Combat setting "Combat Cues" turned off.
You can find it under Settings=>Gameplay=>Combat.
So it turns out you can disable it (which I'm going to). Wonder if it's enabled by default? I don't remember if I turned it on or not. But either way, it should have the option to change the color to say: Bright Blue.
Great help for learning the mechanics of some abilities though.

Since I'm alien to the concept, what colors would be best used to stand out for a person with red/green colour blindness? Do any come to mind?
