spellcrafting idea

The idea is that spellcrafting will be possible but not on the character's magical mind but on usable scrolls.
Crafters will have to already know the effects as class skills l.
Scrolls will have a cooldown depending on how powerful their effects are and a cast time of x seconds per effect.
A scroll with multiple powerful effects should require rare materials to craft.
Crafting a scroll would require the inscriber to compile a magical program that uses a set of rules on how to run the spell.
The ingredients will be:
-Blank scroll(found in containers mostly as low quality and can be improved with specific materials and blessings of gods at their shrines).
-Ink that must previously be combined with crushed soul gem powder.
-pen of different qualities which would have chance to break like a lockpick only more durable, decreased by fatigue after many uses.

Using scrolls would level up the skill line just enough to unlock some passives that decrease cast time make you uninteruptable for a time of the cast and reduce chance to fail casting the scroll's magic.

And then you summon 10 woodelf virgins to dance barefoot during the full moon while drinking psijic ambrosia to complete the process.

Lets not, that would be horribly broken.

Let's bring out the actual Spellcrafting system that was shown off in 2014.

99.9% sure anything shown off in 2014 isnt going to work in the current game.

In terms of code? Almost certainly.

However, the mechanics and design concepts behind it should still be solid. No aspect of it that I can recall to mind should be particularly broken. More than happy to check the original presentation video if it is still around though... if only to recall happier, more hopeful, times.

The entire balance of the system wouldn't work. The game is very different

IF spellcrafting ever comes, I would much rather see it as "consumable scrolls" then "tailor-made active skills". The former is way less likely to end up in everyone and their granny runnin g the exact same set of "super-effective" selfmade skills...

How that might be implemented? That is another discussion.
I could see scrolls not only for every class skill (likely at a slightly reduced effect, so casting your on class skills would be more effective), as well as other skills not found in our classes, including non-combat skills like "open lock" or "teleport to nearest outlaw refugee" or "summon fire/ice/flesh atronarch" or "make charm/intimidate dialouge option available despite not spending a skill point in the perk"...

As opposed to running the same set of super-effective non-selfmade skills like now? :p

btw, spellcrafting is still on the table:

Alandrol Sul: He's making another Numidium?!?
Vivec: Worse, buddy. They're buying it.

Fundamentally not opposed to the idea of consumable scrolls, as long as there was a cool down like with potions.

:) Thanks for the link, made me hopeful it will happen before the game reaches 5 years.

Oh yea of little faith. While dated the original design they talked about showed they had a grasp on how to balance it, I wish more people had seen the videos.

Spellcrafting is already fleshed out – at least for the most part. It's about time to implement it.

They need to balance resource regen around it. Probably why it's still on the backburner. If you can cast the most powerful spells repeatedly without it absolutely trashing your resources so it brings it in line with the more cost effective spells (burst v. sustained damage), you've got a problem.
