They changed how much XP you gain with each level but the total amount of XP to 50 is the same.

    New
    1-30 will be 2mm XP.

    31-50 will be 10mm XP.

    Total of 12mm XP.

    Old

    1-30 will be 4mm XP.

    31-50 will be 8mm XP.

    Total of 12mm XP.

That's my understanding. It's purposefully designed to trap new players who bought Morrowind into playing the game longer as they think leveling will be "really quick". It's just an illusion.

Most of my alts are in their 30s and 40s, and while I feel your pain... it's still technically the same amount of XP to 50, so no one really got f*d. It would have taken you just as long previously. Chances are your progress bar started today farther into level 40 than it was before the patch, since it's not the xp totals themselves that were changed, but more like what the increment is in the total XP line that levelling kicked in.

Like moving hurdles around in a race. The jumps are in different places, but the finish line is still in the same spot. If anything I expect a couple of my mid-level alts will have inexplicably gained a level, because of how the mechanics of this patch works.

I believe you're misunderstanding the update. It's not the rate that's changed... it's the total experience to gain a level.

Mathematically it's a bit confusing, but let's break it down with a hypothetical:

Let's say there are 5 total levels. Originally, it takes 10 experience to get from level 1 to level 2, then 20 more experience to get from 2 to 3, etc., for a level breakdown that looks like this:
    • Level 1: 1-10 total EXP range of 10)
    • Level 2: 10-30 total EXP (range of 20)
    • Level 3: 30-60 total EXP (range of 30)
    • Level 4: 60-100 total EXP (range 40)
    • Level 5: 100+ (max level!)

So, in this system, you need 100 EXP to get to level cap.

Now, what ZOS essentially did with this update is adjust the ranges of each level, so you reach the early levels quicker, but it takes longer to hit the goalposts for the later levels. For example, our new, adjusted 5-level system might look like this:
    • Level 1: 1-5 total EXP (range of 5)
    • Level 2: 5-15 total EXP (range of 10)
    • Level 3: 15-40 total EXP (range of 25)
    • Level 4: 40-100 total EXP (range of 60)
    • Level 5: 100+ (max level!)

The max amount of EXP needed to reach level cap didn't change. All they did was adjust the range of each level so that you earn the first few levels faster, but then it takes a lot longer to get that last one to compensate. The actual amount of experience didn't change, nor the rate with which it was earned.

So you, with your later level character, were sitting on a total of, say, 64 experience. For you, you were level 4 in both scenarios, but you are technically farther into level 4 in the second scenario. But it seems slower because the fraction by which the leveling bar moves is slower, because it needs to cover a range of 60 as opposed to 40.

If you had a character who was a late level 3 in the first system (say sitting at 50 EXP), this change would actually make those characters gain a level, because you're basically redefining how much EXP it takes to reach each level, so someone at 50 EXP would be a 3 in the first system, but a 4 in the second.

That's pretty much what ZOS did here, except on grander scale.

Does that make sense? Confusing, I know, but I promise, we 30s and 40s are not getting screwed. We've earned every EXP we have, and the newbies will have to work just as hard to get where you are right now... their initial progression is just going to feel faster. It's not actually any faster in the long run.

You get less XP from monsters now and more from completing quests. They don't want people grinding Skyreach and such anymore for levels they want quest play. Another chip away at "Play how you want"

Wait, so are sub 50 characters retroactively being granted levels based on the new xp to level values then? Because otherwise, we are in fact getting a bit of a raw deal.

Edit: So Will my 32 Templar log in as a 35-40 templar because based on the new xp tables and his current total xp, he should be there?

I haven't had the chance to log in to check this yet, but according to the patch notes, yes, current mid-late levels should be bumped according to whatever their experience is. Quoth Gina in the patch notes:
Adjusted Experience (XP) for Levels 1 – 50
The experience needed to level from 1 to 50 has been adjusted. Earlier levels now require less experience to obtain, while later levels will require more.
    • The total time to level from 1 to 50 should generally remain unchanged, and anyone currently leveling should not see any decrease to their current level progress – in some cases you may see an increase in level depending on progress.
    • Additionally, all quests now provide more experience to help even the leveling time between those that complete quests versus simply killing monsters.

What is fun about this, is if they didn't change level scaling. Around level 40 is for me when things really go to crap. No matter what I do I can't seem to keep resources and I feel like I do next to no damage. Now given it is partly because the lower level scaling gives you a ton of stats.

But now about the time people find fights getting longer and more boring, your leveling gets longer and more boring. How fun is that!

I suppose it's not bad for those who go into Cyrodiil around level 30 with a lot of the class skills unlocked. If it slows down after that a bit then you won't need to craft new armor as frequently.

Should still be a lot faster than it was at launch, when it took 6 months to level up to veteran ranks in PVP because we didn't receive hardly any XP for player kills.

Ummmm... if all you're gonna do is "quest play" , then even skyrim is better for that rofl. And you don't pay for the mods yet. Never with some help on reddit either even when those show back up on bnet rather than steam. Eso is ironically a much more expensive product of less quality than even skyrim if all you do is quest, and that's saying a lot.

I do, actually. Getting new characters to lvl 15 and weapon-swap faster is good.
