What hirelings say about vampires and sunlight

Two different hirelings tell us that vampires don't mix well with sunlight.

I apologize for the tardiness of this shipment, but circumstances beyond my control limit my component collection activities to the darkest hours of the night. I don't want to worry you, but I have a peculiar condition that requires I stay out of the sunshine. I do my best hunting at night, however.

-- Lady Melina Cassel

My latest traveling companion insisted on traveling at night, which was quite inconvenient and upsetting to my sleep cycle. I began to have my suspicions when he would leave the road to go hunting and return hours later with nothing to show for it. He swore up and down that he didn't know what a vampire was, then one morning it suddenly dawned on him. Have you any use for vampiric ash?

-- Gavin Gavonne

That said, Melina also writes of sea voyages to Sentinel and back in a way with details that suggest she was on deck by daylight.

As far as I know, the game has zero consequence for vampires in sunlight (outside of vampire passive that allows you to enter stealth quicker at night - but even that isn't a consequence, just a night bonus).

It's not a single player game where you could just wait 12 hours, no?
There are many possibilities with which player vampires overpass the tyranny of the sun(which acts as a damage over time)
One would be an enchantment that absorbs light and transfers it into health regen.
Another, the vampires might have evolved supernatural health regen during the day
Did you see that player vampires have pale skin? That might be their skin secreting a very potent sun lotion(UV protection over 9000).

There are many different types of vampires in TES lore, each with slightly different abilities and weaknesses.

It's entirely possible the player characters are one type and some other vampires we encounter are a different type.

Actually, she has photophobia in addition to, but separate from, her vampirism. It's a thing.

THEN ONE MORNING IT SUDDENLY DAWNED ON HIM

    I love Gavin.

I don't play a vamp (though I've felt tempted, always loved vamps) but I would support there being serious nerfs to them during daytime ourdoors.

Different strains of vampirism. The strain the Vestige is cursed with is one that allows them to venture out during the day. As for Melina. Its possible shes capable of using whatever magic that Verandis uses when he too ventures into the day to help the Vestige (As I believe his strain is not one in the same as the Vestiges.).

From what I remember, didn't Verandis get his vampirism directy from Molag Bal?

Yeah, Verandis has a unique bloodline. It might be shared with some of the vampires in Ravenwatch, but I'm unsure. Incidentally, that's probably where he gets his sunlight immunity from. "Daughters of Cold Harbour," (and, yes, this includes Verandis), don't seem to follow exactly the same rules as other vampires.

The Lamae bloodline that players have access to is explicitly sunlight immune.

In ESO there isn't a penalty for vamping in sunlight, unlike other ES titles where you literally smoke, take constant damage, have reduced stats, and seem to gain burn scars. The only downside to vamping in ESO is players laugh at you on the forum when you ask for a skin to hide your vampirism.

It varies based on the game.

In Daggerfall, you can't even enter a temple without lighting up.

In Morrowind, you'll torch on contact with the sun. Though ash storms and cloud cover will reduce the damage.

In Oblivion, you'll start cooking unless you're in Stage 1. The higher your stage, the faster you burn.

In Skyrim, you take a stat hit and can't regenerate resources.
