Q: How does char level and char crafting level determine what mats you harvest

I have a level 50 character that is level 15 in blacksmithing, woodworking and clothing. Just now I went out to farm mats for a writ and instead of finding level 15 mats, I'm finding almost exclusively level 50 mats no matter where I go. (approx 10 level 50 mats for every 3 level 15 mats). This is quite annoying. Can anyone explain, or point me to the explanation of how harvesting works now? I can't seem to find it. Thanks.

It depends of your character lvl and the skill RANK (how many points you invested in the first skill on the crafting tree). Skill lvl doesn't matter.
Example: if you are lvl 50 character with 5 skill points invested in the Metalworking, you will find Rubedite Ore and Ebony Ore. If you are lvl 30 character and didn't invest any skill points in the Metalworking skill, you will find Orchicalc and Iron.
I'm not sure what exact amount of given mat it is, but it may be 50/50.

Ok, thanks. I should have said crafting rank instead of level. The ratio seems to be 80% character level and 20% crafting rank. Which makes it 30% annoying. :)

I liked it better when you could go to a location to get the mats you wanted. The problem with the current system is you have no way to harvest or get drops for the in between or lover level so you can craft other level stuff.

It's actually 50/50 between Character Level and Material Passive Level. Crafting Rank has nothing to do with this, other than unlocking Material Passives so you can find those mats after you spend the skill points.

Sure, in the short run, it can seem that you get more of one level of mat than the other, but it does balance out over time to be 50/50.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

This is some good info. I was considering leveling my craft now since I am lvl 17 player. Didn't want my craft to get too far behind. After reading this I know I made the right decision.

    i am the exact opposite.

if the area and political affiliation of your character determines what the resources you gain are (like it did before 1t) then the whole open world play anywhere in any order really starts blowing up because casual play-thru content means you will likely find zone after zone where the resources you find are mostly useless to you.

before 1T there were few zones where a player of a given level character could run content anf find appropriate nodes and drops... that seriously limits things like how you did dailies.

now, while yes the ones who like to hunt down specific levels of nodes have to do things differently, everyone else gets useful stuff everywhere by casual play. that is a lot better for the game as a whole.

But i still believe they should take away the lower cap on mats so that your higher level crafter could use the stuff they find everywhere to craft gear for anyone lower... with the looks being a choice not locked by material. In some cases i like the lower level looks better than the higher ones and vice versa. this would keep it easy for assistance crafting but still give everybody else the useful nodes regardless of location. Win-Win

However, to be fair, as i do daily writs, the accumulation of lower tier mats from shipments boxes has me pretty well set for my upcoming two new chars so... no big deal if i choose to do some other crafting for others too.
