In what world does working harder give back more energy?

Indulge me for a bit. I understand that this is a fantasy world with magic and not all of the rules of science apply. However, I just can't wrap my head around the idea of heavy attacks giving back more resources but doing less damage.

Even in a fantasy world one has to swing a weapon or concentrate harder to cast a powerful spell. The harder you swing a weapon or pull on a bow means you are using more energy and the more powerful the blow. So how the hell does that equate to getting more energy back?! It should make you more tired! Same for casting a powerful spell. The more powerful the spell the more your chi/mana/spirit (whatever you want to call it) drain is leading to easier exhaustion.

I'm not against the upcoming change but it just ruins immersion and makes no sense.

Someone please rationalize this and don't use the it's magic excuse?

All I know is in boxing quick jabs and uppercut combos wear me out faster then the occasional haymaker but we are sparing for points and quick combos score more . It's not as much cardio to throw occasional clobbers . I've never fought people with real weapons so I don't know about those .

Well, first let's be clear. One heavy attack does hit harder than one light attack, even after the nerf/buff.

This is actually a good thing (I think). It will (hopefully) keep more traditional rotations with a LA weave on top of the charts where they should be, as it requires the most skill. It will also add in a very powerful tool for resource management that (hopefully) wont consume your entire rotation.

I mean if you look at the animation a "heavy" attack is really just a guy procrastinating. They're almost the same animation, just that one is slower. Are you really gonna tell me that just because I grunted and swung my daggers around for a bit, that's what makes them gonna hit harder? Please, he's just resting his arms for a bit before hitting.

The way I see it, your character is catching their breath when they slow down for a heavy attack after a barrage of skills. I'm pretty sure swinging a sword is easier than something like screaming and making spikes come out of your back, or summoning a spear of divine light and then hurling it at an enemy, or yelling and charging headlong into someone to clobber them with a shield.

This really is not a change, though. Heavy attacking to get your magicka or stamina back has always been a part of the game.

it's quite stupid, but so is the same idea that fast sneak speeds are bad.

This isn't true, at least not on PC. At one point only resto staves restored magicka on completion of a full channel. This makes a bit of sense. It did, however, put stamina builds at a disadvantage. (Remember, this is back with soft caps and before stamina morphs of class skills, CP, cost reduction of weapon skills and many stamina based sets.) So for game mechanic reasons, they added resource return on heavy attacks across all weapons. No, it doesn't make sense in the real world, but it's for balance of build diversity.

Maybe it's the adrenaline rush/excitement of performing a "heavy attack" that pumps up our character (stamina) or gives us a nice tingly feeling of joy (magicka)?

Thinkuva big spring. You really wind it up yeah, to make bigga attack. After attack issa now spring all relaxed. Invigorated, refreshed, yes?

One may imagine a large pendulum, as it strikes in one direction it gains momentum into the other and vice versa ad infinituum.

But I think nuclear fission was probably right. Little dromathracells keeping the bunny going. ;)
