I played FFXIV since beta and actually only picked up ESO due to an account mishap. My bank flagged the subscription as fraud so they banned the account. I ended up getting my account back but only after 6 months. I got back in and played for the 4 free days and was loving it (this was last week). Well, I went to resub again, and that was pretty much going to be my move away from ESO. Well I end up getting errors 401 and 601 depending on how I wanted to pay. With a little digging, it turns out it's a pretty random but pretty common issue that pretty much prevents you from being able to play the game without jumping through hoops. So I said forget it.

I enjoy FFXIV very much, but the grind for gear is no better than ESO, and the customer support for FFXIV is straight garbage. I guess it really comes down to your style preference, both graphically and mechanically.

FF has some fun elements and I love the crafting & guild housing system (and how I could crossdress my character without him looking funny) but the story is just bad. Normally that's not a problem for MMO but FF is very story-driven. So I ended up sitting through hours of boring cutscenes, learning about how utterly unconvincing and uninspirational the majority of characters are (there were occasionally some interesting pieces of dialogue and I grew to like one or two of those NPCs, but generally speaking I didn't enjoy the storytelling style.)

I'm not a big fan of mainstream anime, so it could be that.

IMHO, there's not much to compare between the two. They're both MMOs and have similar MMO aspects (quests, dungeons, etc.) but the implementation is very different.

If you like slow, tab-targeted, boxed-in, story-on-rails games where you can slog through most of the content playing one handed while eating a burrito and where the game doesn't really begin until you hit level cap, then FF is your game.

Some people like that. Other people don't.

That being said, as far as games of that nature go it is done nicely. The graphics are good, and the game is solid. Things "just work". You're far more likely to run into account issues than you are to run into any in game issues. It also has all the nice perks and quirks of FF story lines if you're a fan of the series (though some have a more "mature" content than the days of yore).

I lost my taste for the old tab-targeted/fixed progression type games a while ago. I prefer the large open world, action-oriented combat genre (ESO, GW2, etc.). But that's just me.

Tried to zoom out to reduce the target marker icon in FF, but then the icon is equally tall as some of the largest creatures in the game. A huge yellowish icon that pops up each time you attack something is just incredibly stupid.

Final Fantasy has some good visuals but it's just too slow with the 2.5s global cool down.
you can only use one ability every 2.5 second?
How does that work in practice? thinking the one second in ESO is long enough.
Ok with WOW style combat but wow is pretty fast paced.

FF14 is arguably the #1 and easily #2 PvE mmorpg out there right now. PvP is bad. The game has flying and swimming in the newer areas. p2p. Community is good.

ESO PvE scene is pretty weak. PvP is an imba mess. I guess the good thing about ESO is how everything is voice acted. b2p. Plays more like a single player game... so the need for a community isn't much of a necessity.

I play ESO though. The J-RPG theme just don't entice me. Feels like the devs were high making that game.

As well as deflated as a lot of players play on the game's launcher, which is probably the case for all three games on the list. Another FF player send me the following link to get an idea of active player count https://ffxivcensus.com/

VERY impressive. It's no wonder Blizzard decided to open up the Tomb of Sargares the same day as Stormblood's release.

It does look good, but the Stormblood launch wasn't impressive for most players.

Apparently that's Blizzard's tactic every time FF has a release. I assume they have some raids available which they'll simply open when a launch could threaten their subscriber numbers. Smart move if it works for them.

Played both, couldnt get past the combat in FFXIV which is imo over the top. Like the more realistic combat in ESO. Same for graphics, ESO is more "realistic".

Although some of the features in FFXIV would be nice if they come to ESO.

    - Play every class on one toon (make all skill lines available on a single toon)
    - More random events in the world like in FFXIV would be good for ESO.

Apples and oranges really, the gameplay styles are very different but personally I find ESO to be the more appealing MMO. If you have more fun on FF then have at it hoss ^_^

FFXIV?! You spend hours every day grinding dungeons so you can get token (tomes) to purchase armor from a certain tier. When you've finally collected a full set of armor, you know what you get to look forward to? Grinding dungeons again for different tokens so you can buy armor from the next tier of armor. When you're done with that, guess what? There's another tier for you to grind.
You have to grind daily to level up your crafting and resource collecting. You have to grind daily to level up your weapon. The economy is crap thanks to the centralized auction house. The combat is slow and dull (tab-targeting and a GCD, bleh). You can't rob, feed off of or kill npcs. You can't become a vampire, werewolf, or thief. Housing is a joke. The Golden Tower, though a pleasant distraction, is ultimately pointless. The quests are repetitive and unimaginative (remember the moogle quests). Pvp is a joke. Eorzea is NOT open world, and FFXIV likes to lock content behind the story. Want to know what the majority of end-game players are doing? Standing around the end-game town showing off whatever mount they just got from grinding.
In the end, I stopped playing FFXIV because it felt like a boring full-time job.
Omniel Morningstar - Khajiit - Nightblade
Veyron Galerion - Altmer - Sorcerer

Get token (tomes) to purchase armor from a certain tier - I'm sure running vMSA hundreds of times without getting the weapon you need / want is much better.

Housing is a joke - Are you serious? ESO housing is instanced copy / pasted content with some overpriced time-limited exclusives. And you think that's better?!

Eorzea is NOT open world - Neither is Tamriel

Showing off whatever mount they just got from grinding - Better than showing off that mount you got from the Crown Store. And you can get mounts in FF by playing the game.

I tried FFXIV....and after about an hour called it quits...the auto attacks were annoying, the cooldowns were annoying, the lack of voice acting stood out as particularly cheap in this day and age. There was no fun whatsoever to be had. Admittedly I dont play a lot of MMOs...but even Ultima Online back in the day was far better than FFXIV....what a disappointment that game was
