So I know that every update brings good and bad changes. I could chronicle a few of the ones I liked the most or loathed the most as well as all the ones that resulted in my changing what toon I mainly played on (5 times so far 6 times if I intended to stay active in Morrowind.) I think all of that would push the poll though so I marked the update just with the content and universal changes to jog your memory. I am curious when most folks were happiest with that balance of one class against another and stam vs. magic. I suspect it will be different PVE vs PVP and also different for personal reasons. I would certainly be happy to here your reasons as well. At some point I will post my reasons as well.

Note, this is a poll for balance of stam vs magic and one class vs another. This is not a poll for balance of content strength vs player power. I think we all know that was in 1.5 when the devs had softcaps and lack of CP to help them and hasn't been even close ever since.

Lets see what folks think. I have heard a few people mention this or that update and thought it might be fun to aggregate some data. I have included just the big updates and none of the ones pre 1.5 in vanilla. Early in game combat was adjusted almost weekly and often in small increments because ZOS had employees. Recently, most adjustments have been large and happened only concurrently with big content updates many months apart. This has sometimes been as dramatic as doubling an ability (wall of elements) or reducing it by as much as 80% (Siphoning strikes.) .

I am currently worried for the future of ESO. Population seems like it is in free fall and the cancellation of the North America in-person gathering feels very much like pulling the plug. Kudos on fixing the in-game economy though. Clearly whatever gold shenanigans were happening the last couple years are fixed.

I must not know how to write poles well because nobody commented on why they chose what they did. I really wanted to see how people evaluated balance at different times.

Anyhow, I chose the shadows update because at that time we actually seemed to have DPS of both stam and mag and about every class commonly in trials. Stam, which became the only thing once folks got a hold of the vMA dual wield weapons, had been eventually nerfed to the point that it actually was no longer the dominant presence but was still good dps. In shadows there were more mag dps than stam though the stam did more damage on average. All your ranged players were mag which contributed to the greater number of mag toons as well as a few of the melee preferring the utility of mag to the raw dps of stam. Numbers were close enough between different builds this was all possible at that time. You also still had some mNB's about as the proc sets that would out-date them would not drop until One Tamriel and mSorcs and mDK's not yet gotten all the surprising buffs that would move them from a little better than all alternatives to utterly dominant.

It was around the Imperial City dlc that I noticed stam and magic getting out of whack with one another, and also when significant class imbalance issues seemed chronic. I'm not sure it was this patch precisely that caused it...it might be that this was the timeframe where the player base began adapting to exploit game changes in a way that resulted in imbalance. Several things began occurring:

    1. The CP system allows a character to overcome weaknesses. Some classes benefit more than others. For example, magsorcs were designed with powerful damage abilities offset by their high cost. Stamblades are squishy. Through the cp system, a stamblade can get like 40% less squishy through hardy and elemental defender. But a sorc with unlimited magic used toward shields and heals can become 300% less squishy.

    2. The game began expanding the number of available sets dramatically. More sets allow players to exacerbate the power creep strategically. Stamblades have been able to stack sets with ridiculous dps procs, making them deadly in pvp. And magsorcs could stack sets that return magic, allowing them to spam their most expensive skills continuously.

    3. The designers (imo) began obnoxiously favoring magic, lol. There's no one CP or set that makes magic builds superior, but there are a lot of little things that add up. For example, Arcane Well returns magic. A little...but even a little helps. Then they offer a shield that offers a little magic on damage. Etc, etc, etc. Back in vanilla, my magsorc and magplar would run dry a lot. They haven't in months. I would kill for a shield on my stamblade that offered a 9000 damage shield for six seconds with stam returned with every hit.

    4. After IC, the killer meta ability became standard. What I mean is that there was perpetually one spam ability that became utterly obnoxious and OP. It was wrecking blow for a while. Then snipe for a bit. Then radient destruction.

Whatever caused it, for over a year the best players have complained that stamina builds are not competitive in end game PVE. And players have complained about magblades for quite a while. I don't know...I read these forums all the time...and my experience is that every major update, zos comes up with a bunch of "imperatives" that no one asked for, while ignoring popular requests. As an example, I never recall reading much about people wanting major frost staff changes...but ,agblade players have asked for some magblade abilities to be looked at. So when the last patch came along, it was weird that we got all this frost staff crap and no attention to the stuff the community was asking for.

But...meh...it's still a great game, and the fact that the dev team seems (I'm sorry) either incompetent or too arrogant to listen has continued to produce a wildly fluctuating, unpredictable product. And so perhaps that helps make ESO a little more like real life, where part of the challenge stems from things not being fair or balanced, and never quite knowing of things are going to work as they should.

Agreed. I found it very difficult to pick one. Until I saw your comment. This is exactly what they did.
It's very sad that we have to ask them to balance the game, when it should be apart of their core philosophy. Cmaan Wrobel.

Also, the more time goes on, the more people are starting to think that Morrowind patch might just work...with the exception of an OP Warden to boost sales....
