If I made my characters look like me I would break the servers with the awesomeness that they would be.
Plus I would have a hard time telling them apart.....
OK, seriously, I make my characters have, well, character. I do lean towards attractive as I have to look at them all the time. Yes, I play both Male and Female characters. But only one is a what I would call a beauty. OK, two are but I keep her under a goofy hat so you can't see her face.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
PakKat "Everything was going well, until I died"
Gary Gravestink "I am glad you died, I needed the help"
I like my character to be a straight talker and to look like someone who gets stuff done.
That's why I use the Furious personality and Mind-Shriven skin on my Orc.
But sometimes, I throw on the Jester personality for funsies.
"If a person is truly desirous of something, perhaps being set on fire does not seem so bad."
Some of them are pretty. Some of them not so much. Some of them are angry. Some of them are happy. Some of them are sexy. Some of them are melancholy. Some of them are nerdy. Some of them are mischiefous. Some of them are brutal. Some of them are haughty. Some of them are badass. Some of them are nondescript. Some of them are heroic. Some of them are villainous. Some of them... you get the point, yes?
None of them are "silly" though, I take my RPGs seriously. At best, some may be having times when they are in-character silly.
None of them look like me either.
After all, I make characters to escape from my reality, even if its just for a little bit.
So at best, they look like I wish I looked if I lived in a fantasy world...
Depends on the backstory. I will start using random till I find one I can fine tune into what I want. I try to make my female characters sexually attractive to me, although lately I have noticed they seem to resemble my real life cousins. That was probably too much information.

I make my characters attractive, and relatively flawless without exaggerating any features. That said I also try to make them look natural, a character that would actually live in the world.
I only make guys, but I try to make my guys look at attractive yet battle hardened. Love to throw properly placed scars and damage while still having an attractive character.
It depends on the character! But in general I don't make them ugly for the reason @Nestor mentioned - if I'm going to stare at them every time I open the inventory during hundreds of hours of gameplay, I want a face I can bear to look at.
Depends. My first character was a tribute to my long time kitty friend who passed away in early 2015. So I made a siamese khajiit. I made an altimer and she is fugly because I don't like altimers lol
My argonians I have no clue if they are attractive or not. Cause lizards.
Can we get a an "Average" or "Normal" on there? I don't really go for any of the listed ones. I want my characters to be as real as possible and believable. I have different anatomy for every race as well. It adds much to overall immersion.
Although... I do have a dunmer that could be considered sexy, however no big boobs or butt or anything. Just a "normal" dunmer gal that looks great. Or maybe it's just that i like dunmer..... xD
I just don't know... Don't ask me about it I'm tired of all the constant, unreal idealising in modern culture. Actually so much that if we were allowed to customise the look of nude bodies.... breasts and other things they would look as natural as possible. (Yeah i hate fake and unrealistic but not necessarily body hair - such a hypocrite i know! )
Korith is larger than life. Hes tall, muscular and scarred from his many battles in life.
Enrerion is tall, slender and has the sharp features notorious in Altmer that are high-born.
Laerinel is small, nimble, beautiful and dangerous.
Caius is short, burned and muscular. His features are typical of an Imperial.
Tenarei is like Laerinel for the most part. Small, but tatted and bearing the horns few bosmer are blessed with.
Dazsh is old, wrinkled and scarred from his time as a warrior. His bland grey fur is only offset by his rich dark mane.
Aban is small framed, olive skinned and bald. Hes not a fighter but a scholar and his appearance reflects this.
Kheshna is a slender but strong orc. She is probably as pretty as a female orc can get. At least according to other orcs.
Gallisten is definitely a pretty boy. With piercing blue eyes, soft cheek bones and an angular but still full face.
Etain is beautiful in an almost haunted way. Dark brown eyes match her hair and for a Reachman shes quite mesmerizing.
Bathes is as black as an oil slick. Hes slinder and small framed with a square jaw.
Yynril is still young enough to retain his hair color but old enough to wear the wrinkles and skin blemishes of a long hard life.
