"Invalid / Outdated Client"

Suddenly this morning, I can't launch the game. When I try to log in, I get a notice saying "You have attempted to log in via an invalid / outdated client." It tells me to quit and update the client via the patcher.
I see there was an update this morning, and my launcher does not seem to have automatically downloaded it. Unfortunately I don't see any option to manually tell it to download the new patch, and no matter how many times I re-launch the launcher, it doesn't update the client.
Are the "launcher" and the "patcher" the same thing? Is there something I'm missing? I can't play at all.
Mac user on PC/Mac NA.

It was a fiddly business, but I finally found the manual update and repair options hidden in a tiny drop-down menu, and after restarting my computer and re-launching the launcher several times I finally got the patch download to start.
