Haven't played in 2 years, need help getting back into the game

Ok, I quit around January of 2015 because of some "issues" and things promised by Zenni that turned out to be falsehoods. Me and 4 of my friends quit because of it. Now, me and one of my friends decided to come back to see what's changed.

So so far I kind of enjoy the game, but I was a bit annoyed all my stats were reset, and I couldn't find much online on how to restat my mage, I went in kind of blind. So far I feel rather weak compared to what I'm seeing around me. I'm also running into a cash issue. I logged back into the game with no gold on my character or bank. No one can explain why, but whatever, I'll just make more gold. My issue is that this crime system costs me an insane amount of gold, most of the time unavoidably.

I just have 4 questions, and I feel I can figure the rest out on my own.

1. How do I earn money? In the last 2 days I've played, I've looted maybe 2k worth of gold and items, but I've spent ~ 4k on clearing my name. How do people make gold with this system in place?
2. What's a good site on character builds? I am not seeing a lot of information on the Google, so I'm not seeing a lot of diverse builds out there. I just want a good mage I can solo grind with.
3. How do I craft new gear sets? Before all you had to do was find a location for that set and craft it there, now when I visit sites, they are empty. I was told you now have to find crafting schematics, but is it just all 100% rng?
4. I see there is this new champion system. What's the best way to get champion levels?

I don't want to sound needy, but i'm kind of stuck. I cannot kill like I once did before I left, and I'm afraid to go into towns because I can't afford this bounty system.

    1. Two of the best ways to make money are joining a guild and selling materials and sought after gear or selling every piece of trash gear you find to a merchant.
    2. Check out Alcast's website for some good build for end game and PvP. As for grinding builds, not a lot out there.
    3. To craft sets you need to know traits. Traits can be researched from gear you loot and there is a research tab on the crafting UI. It is the second last tab.
    4. Two ways; either do content such as quests and dungeons or grind. Getting CP is the same way as getting levels.

Ok, for the first, I have to ask which server you're running on, as that might make a difference in some of the advice I give you. However, for some of the others, one of the best sites for learning to build is http://deltiasgaming.com/ which hosts many character build types. For making gold, one of the best things to do is join a trade guild. If you're on PC/NA, I might suggest that you poke me @alassirana and I can see if I can invite you to one of my two trading guilds I'm in. Trade guilds are one good way to make money.

For gear sets: Many are drop only, and there is information on that at http://elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Sets which will give you stats on both dropped gear and on crafted gear. As before, if you end up in a good trade guild, you can often get someone to make you something nice if you don't have all of the traits yourself. Experienced trade guilds also have crafters proficient in most crafting motifs as well, so you might be able to customize your look somewhat (http://eso.mmo-fashion.com/ for details).

Champion points are gained by any character that you have that is over level 50. All characters over 50 add to the champion point pool, and all characters (even lower level ones) can use the points that are in that pool.

If you need any more help, feel free to ask.

    1. I make most of my money through selling items in the guild store, doing daily crafting writs and selling ornate items. I haven't used theft as a means of income ever, as with the bounty system you can easily lose more than you make.

    2. Youtube is a pretty solid place for any type of build.

    3. Crafting stations, if you want specialized crafting sets, you'll need to find them. There is typically three special crafting stations per zone and you'll need to have researched the required amount of traits before being able to craft that set. Check the ESO wiki, has all the information there.

    4. Gaining experience. You start earning champion points after level 50.

    1. You can actually make considerable amounts of gold stealing but you need to be careful about it. Npcs aren't very attentive. If their back is to you - no one can see you - you can take stuff. Sneak and never loot if it doesn't say you're hidden, but for extra assurance do make sure npcs have their backs to you(or if there're no guards to see it just kill all the witnesses). That aside, a lot of overland sets are really good now and people will pay crazy money for right pieces in right traits, like 400k gold for Necropotence sharpened fire staff for example - assuming it's max level of course. You could just farm WB of the zones where good sets drop for loot if you're 160+ cp and that's your thing. I also recommend doing crafting writs, they net a nice supply of gold mats and occasional master writ that you can sell.

    2. I'd second Alcast. It's not very optimal for newbies but I don't know what level you are and at the very least it'll point you in the right direction. Do keep in mind Morrowind is likely to change quite a few things though.

    3. Crafting never changed, to craft a set you gotta go to this set crafting station and know the required number of traits. What you've heard is probably in relation to furniture crafting - in order to craft furniture you need to learn its "recipe"(blueprint/diagram/whatever) after which you can craft it at the corresponding crafting station. Furniture is just fluff for the housing system basically.

    4. I'd say just play the game, at low numbers cp are super easy to get. Keep in mind you get enlightened every day which lets you earn cp considerably faster for next 400k XP . Enlightenment stacks for 12 days I think. If you really wanna grind Skyreach is a big thing thing right now. Gear cap is 160 cp, I wouldn't worry too much after that. Prior to 160, don't forget to keep your gear updated to your level. It's all the more important now with global battle leveling(everything, including you, always gets scaled to max level).

Well, welcome back, and whoa there...

Your timing may turn out to be impeccable, and not in a great way.

You can still familiarize yourself with the current state of the game:
    1. Kill things, vendor everything. This won't make you millions, but you'll come out ahead. You can also sell things in chat or via guild vendor, but just NPC vendoring everything you don't intend to wear will net you enough gold to function.

Depending on how far along you are, the first 10k takes forever, after that it's hardly ever an issue again.
    2. Alcast is good, as mentioned. Tamriel Foundry has builds of all kinds for magicka, stamina, and all roles and functions.
elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Elder+Scrolls+Online+Wiki is an excellent source for skills/gear, etc.
en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Online also has lots of good info.
    3. Crafting requires research. The initial pop-up gives more detail when you activate a crafting station. They likely show 'empty' because the Have Items / Have Knowledge boxes are checked. Also know there are four different icons at top, one pair for the set items and one for standard, each having one for weapons/armor respectively.

You can also get crafting writ certified by reading the writ board near most any crafting station in town. This will unlock a more detailed crafting tutorial for the appropriate craft.
    4. Lastly, hit level 50 on at least one character, then do stuff. You'll earn CP's automatically (only on L50+ characters), get enlightenment (it's explained when you unlock 50), and you'll have a catch-up mechanic that will make it easier to earn these at lower levels, as the name implies.

*Last word of caution: a major update is slated for June 6th, which will likely change (again) many aspects you are trying to refamiliarize yourself with, including gear, skills, etc.

So, while you can get used to some things again now, you might hold of on making gear until the update takes place. (You can still research traits in the meantime.)
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

    Earn it.

IRL'ing for a while for assorted reasons, in forum, and in game.
I am neither warm, nor fuzzy...
Probably has checkbox on Customer Service profile that say High Aggro, 99% immunity to BS

    Thanks for the info.

What/where is Skyreach, and what is Enlightenment?
  • silvermistktralasub17_ESO
Skyreach is a location in Craglorn (which you can now reach at under level 50 as long as you can get to the second city of your alliance and board the wagon there). Usually 'skyreach carry's' are advertised in craglorn zone chat. Enlightenment is essentially 'rested xp' as some games have, the idea that when you are offline, you store 'potential' for experience that increases the amount of xp you get when you do adventure for an amount of time/xp that is determined by the amount of time you were logged off.

Skyreach is a location in Craglorn. The one most people grind is Skyreach Catacombs. Enlightenment is a bonus you get to earning champion points. It is a 4x multiplier that applies every day so earning 100XP while enlightened will give 400XP to your next champion point. After you gain 100,000XP, enlightenment wears off but this can be extended if you don't play or use that enlightenment. So you don't use it on day 1, when you get enlightenment on day 2 you'll be able to get 200k XP/800k enlightened XP before it wears off.

I just came back about a month ago myself after being gone since the beginning. Quite the difference vs how it was released.

Just doing quests and dolmens is a good way to make gold. There are often dolmen groups running through zones attacking them over and over. I've made a good amount for my low level characters that way. There are plenty of places you can scrounge, steal, etc., and not get caught. Just be patient, but even in a room full of people you can still take things and not be detected.

    2. All I know is that "hybrid" builds are a no-go. I imagine at 50+ that's significant, my highest character is 36 right now. But they've already given a couple good options. It is hard to surf through sites though, some of them are based on pre- 'one tamriel' era which was much different.

    3. you can research traits on gear you pick up or don't use anymore. For each of the three gear crafting skills (blacksmith, clothing, woodworking) there's even an option (second to last) for researching more than one item at a time for just one skill point. You can pick up the traits fairly quickly that way for whichever character you want to learn them. The only blueprints that I've seen are for making furniture and recipes for provisioning (food and drink). When you use a crafting station, the "triangle" with the 3 circles option is where you research. Just scroll through and you'll see anything you're carrying and anything in your bank is up for both research and deconstruction.

    4. Since I'm not 50+ I can't say much about it. All I know is that you get champion points for just leveling once you hit 50. The "max" usable points is 600 as I understand. Supposedly, that will increase once morrowind is released in June, but I've only heard it spoken, not confirmed.

And you can join 5 guilds (yes, 5). So, make 2 or 3 trading guilds and you can sell on their "guild store" up to 30 items each guild. In the main zones for each alliance (auridon, glenumbra, stonefalls) there are always guilds recruiting for trading and otherwise. As far as your bank, it is shared amongst all your characters. Your characters don't have a personal bank/vault. Oh and if you're a subscriber (ESO+) your crafting bag is shared server-wide. So, anything in it can be accessed for crafting by all your characters. Fairly useful and worthwhile thing. (I've seen plenty of people exclaiming how that crafting bag is the only reason they are a sub. lol)

Good luck, I'm still learning too, but it is fun and going well. Much different than at the beginning.

Oh, if you don't have add-ons, get them. There's a program called minion that has a good amount of add-ons for the game. (www.esoui.com) They make things so much easier. Lots of location types that show things on your map that you wouldn't normally see, like crafting stations, points of interest, sky shards, etc. Along with having a mini-map, UI interface, etc. I use about 15 myself and they are definitely helpful in the ability to play and function. But, up to you.

And don't forget foraging - picking up those nodes can give you some good items to sell - anything gold will net a fair return as it is little extra effort involved in gathering.

I returned after 2 years away and found :

    - all my old gear was useless :) You will get free champion points on your 50's when you login, get some crafted or drops that match that level. You will not need to upgrade everything often, it is often enough to take advantage of the drops in your area to keep things reasonable until you hit the equipment cap at CP 160
    - once a char is 50, it will share champion points gained with all other 50's so levelling one char will raise all up. As a result, don't mass craft gear for all chars until you are above CP160
    - research CP allocation for your style of play, it will not make a lot of difference early on but costs gold to change so may as well get it roughly right and save $
    - if you want to craft (ever) start researching early and keep it going. It can take a month or so to research the last traits so the earlier you start the better. I forgot this when I came back and lost a month or so.
    - get the trading addon Master Merchant then join 2-3 trading guilds. Watch out for those that demand taxes and/or minimum trading levels to ensure you can live up to the requirements
    - if you need mindless CP gains plus jewelry, do the dolmens in the appropriate zone. There is usually a group rotating around them and you might get some good items from chest for use or sale. Not the quickest but easy and makes $
    - do daily quests for Undaunted as their chests are the only way to get some gear - you get "keys" for doing the daily dungeon 4 man runs.
    - Finish the main quests for each zone as is a good way for both xp and skill points.
    - Don't pickpocket or take stuff from boxes unless you are hidden (as mentioned above) - it can be profitable but you need to know what you are doing and not find yourself constantly assaulted by guards. I did this a lot when I came back before I realised :)

The odd bit is that I started back into this game with a champion level of 30, and all the gear I had on me was cl30. So far I haven't found better than my 2 year old gear. That seem right?

    1. How do I earn money? In the last 2 days I've played, I've looted maybe 2k worth of gold and items, but I've spent ~ 4k on clearing my name. How do people make gold with this system in place?
Fastest way is going around to all the guild traders in the world, buying stuff that is on sale below avg price and reselling. If you don't have enough gold to buy stuff, then you can pick alchemy flowers in Coldharbour, craft potions to sell, make stacks of green CP 150 food and vendor them or fence lots of stolen green/blue items etc. You can search for deals using Master Merchant and Awesome Guild Store add ons.

    2. What's a good site on character builds? I am not seeing a lot of information on the Google, so I'm not seeing a lot of diverse builds out there. I just want a good mage I can solo grind with.
This forum, Tamriel Foundry, youtube. For grinding build I would just use any sustain sets ( Seducers, Magnus, Willow's Path, Alteration Mastery, Lich, Transmutation, etc), ideally everything with Training trait and upgraded to purple quality. You can get 80-90% XP boost from all purple training gear, 50-150% boost from scrolls or XP potions, 10% ESO Plus, 10% from being in group with 2 people, 10% from pledge of Mara and up to 13% XP boost from Enemy Keep bonus if you are in Cyrodiil.

    3. How do I craft new gear sets? Before all you had to do was find a location for that set and craft it there, now when I visit sites, they are empty. I was told you now have to find crafting schematics, but is it just all 100% rng?
If you install Craft Store add on, it will port you to the nearest wayshrine for every crafted set station. Crafting schematics are only for furniture (housing stuff).

    4. I see there is this new champion system. What's the best way to get champion levels?
Grinding is always fastest (Skyreach, Imperial City Sewer, Cracked Wood Cave, public dungeons etc), but there is a catch up mechanism now, so you earn them pretty fast when you have low CP just by playing the game normally in PVP, dungeons, quests etc. It's not necessary to grind anymore unless you are in a hurry to reach CP cap.

A word about bounties. Make sure in your game settings that you turn off autoloot on stolen items, and that you turn on "prevent attacking innocents". These two settings will really help you from getting unintentional bounties. If you want to steal things to make money, do the following first:

    - Max out the passives in the legerdemain and the thieves' guild skill lines that make stealing much easier. Everyone gets the legerdemain line, but you need the thieves' guild dlc to get their skill line.
    - Make a set of medium armor to put on while stealing. There are medium armor passives that make you a lot harder to detect. There are also gear sets that make you harder to see while stealthed.

As for bounties, you never have to pay them. Bounties go down over time, even when you are logged out. If you rack up a bounty, go get a bite to eat, or play another character for awhile, or go somewhere where there are no guards. There is a passive in the thieves' guild skill line that makes your bounty go down much quicker, and is definitely worth getting if you intend to steal a lot.

Perhaps the easiest way for a new character to make money is resource farming. You would be surprised at how much materials sell for (some herbs like nirnroot sell for over 200g each, and are always in demand). Install the add-on TTC (
Tamriel Trade Center), as it will show you the market value of items when you look at them in your inventory. For even more money, up your crafting skills, and put points into the refining passive for ore, wood, and cloth/leather. Refining raw materials gives you quite a bit of legendary crafting mats, which sell in the 1000's. Even refining tier 1 mats will give you these legendary items. As a side note, the best way to level crafting is deconstructing all your drops. Never try to level your crafting skill by creating things.

Another easy way to make money is to do the daily figher/mage/undaunted quests (note that I said quests, not pledges). They are very quick to do, and give you a lot of ornate items as a reward that vendor for quite a bit of money. Plus you have a chance to get a Draugr motif page that sells for over 10k.

Well, spent ~2-3 hours yesterday just running dolmens and was able to get to champ level 51 and ~ 6.5k gold in pocket. Still have about 100 blue and green items in my inventory I need to sell, just need a trading guild.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
