Honestly, Hundings palace is the nicest of the large homes but sadly Redguard.

Speak for yourself, Redguard architecture is pretty awesome and reflective of a proud and hardy people.
I personally think it's a fair price, especially considering how easy it is to make gold in this game.
What is it lately with all these threads either asking for lower prices or begging for Free stuff?

Nords got screwed on Old Mistveil as the "large home".

They got screwed on their medium house as well, but Autumn's Gate is imo the best value small house.
I've been experimenting with Autumn's Gate on the PTS. If you're careful you can add interior walls that look real match the existing walls; thereby creating distinct rooms and additional wall space. It's not palatial, but you can have 3 totally separate rooms without feeling crowded or resorting to those silly, overpriced "dividers".I have Autumn's Gate. I really like the yard but the inside is just one room without much wall space so it makes the decorating a little difficult for creativity....

To me the most interesting thing in Skyrim houses is the ambient music that is played on this territory. Mainly by this reason I wish to settle in Skyrim. The landscape is secondary, I just wish to listen to this music all the time. Play it in Mournoth Keep area and I swear I'll buy this house for 300k even today.

Id love to have the bgm for gold coast or night time on bleackrock that has the pretty piano tune
Don't buy Morrowind
You forgot Mathiisen.... if you're interested in lots of space, and are 1 of those people who is super creative? I'd recommend: Strident Springs (I think that's the imperial house), Forsaken Stronghold, Hunding's Palatial Palace, or Grand Topal Hideaway....
I'd like to have medium house with small garden out in the wilds in Skyrim, but not in a middle of city, like the Grymharth's Woe in Wildhelm, which even does not have any garden. And for a decent price, approx 300-400k is max.
Skyrim housings need more love, such a beautiful place with poor selection of houses.

I do not understand why the developers/artists went to such trouble to make over 45 distinct homes, and then price them such that everybody buys the same 10-15 houses.

They didn't. Every property you can buy, except perhaps Topal, was already in the game. Most from day 1.
However, the customization system is the best I have seen in a game, so your point is still valid. It would be even better if they sell modular expansions.
Old Mistveil is probably my favorite home out of all the ones I've gotten so far. I actually purposefully look for the smallest home in each category so I get the most out of the undersized build space given to us. It's the only home that size or bigger I've seen where I've filled it up with all kinds of clutter to wear it doesn't look like it has empty sections. To me, that actually makes it valuable more than just having more space.
BUT, if ZOS every fixes the lame amount of build slots they give us, my opinion would change.
