My objection is that pauldrons on a mage robe or tunic look as silly as the dumb hip flappers that most of the light armor robes/tunics have.
Since we have the technology to hide each horse upgrade and player helmets, I should think it would not hard to expand those options to include each armor slot. A barefoot Khajiit who wants his claws out. A mage not having to wear gauntlets with her robe. . . . Plenty of reasons to offer this flexibility. It might even allow my mage to fight in actual mage robes instead of having to cover her shoulder and hip flappers up with a combat evening gown costume.
