The one you like the look of. Honestly doesn't really matter if you are just farming gear.

Thanks for you input! I was leaning towards a Dark Elf.

Hoping now that I am running a Magic character, that vMA will start giving me stamina weapons lol

Usually the case for me on my stamnb I got multiple sharpened destro staffs and restro but no sharpened bow or DW weapons. Still haven't been rewarded with a sharpened Great sword or DW.

If you are looking at pure magic my lead choice would be Breton. The boost to magic is the same as the HE and DE, the magic resistances are higher than the other two and the magic boost comes earlier than the HE or DE..

Second would would be a HE because you can access some very useful active/passive skills in the Destruction Staff line sooner.

The DE is well rounded, picks up nice boosts to fire damage and fire resistance. Also LOVE those red eyes.

This advice might be good for a casual player, but in terms of maximizing dps in end game content, breton comes 3rd. I still play it on my magsorc though because I love bretons :p

If you're looking at Magsorc, then the 'best' would be High Elf. Some people say Dark Elf but they only get bonus with FIRE damage, and if you're like me and hate using a Fire staff, then you don't get a racial bonus when using Lightning or Frost staff.

Also, the bonus with Ancient Knowledge... if you use a Lightning Staff on back bar and switch to Inferno bar, you lose the bonus because each tick of AoE damage counts for the bar you're currently on. Thus, with High Elf, you get bonus for every elemental damage you do, Dark Elf only for FIRE damage.

Breton... if you're looking for the BEST you don't want Breton as they receive absolutely NO bonus to damage, and share the exact boost to Magicka that High Elf and Dark Elf receive. Sure Bretons have Spell Resistance, but if you kill things faster then you have no worries about taking damage. I run Breton on my Magplar because he is DPS/Healer and spends a lot of time in melee combat... if I were running a Magsorc I'd definitely be going High Elf.

High Elf has 4% bonus to all elemental damage and most sorcerer skills are lightning damage, 10% maximum magicka and 9% magicka recovery while Dark Elf has 7% bonus to fire damage and 2% to frost and lightning damage, 9% maximum magicka; Dark Elf also has 6% maximum stamina, which is not much on a magicka build anyway, but can provide a bit more dark conversion when in a pinch

Some things to consider in group content:
    - Extra 9% magicka recovery is not as good as it looks because you want to maximize spell damage and rely on healer cost reduction (running Worm Cult) and dirrect suport (elemental drain & orbs). Most likely you will be running with < 1K recovery so that 9% bonus will only be ~70-80, which is negligible; The 1% difference in maximum magicka is also negligible.
    - You will most likely run elemental blockade together with liquid lightning on your back bar as sorcerer, and inferno staff is better to run on backbar in AoE fights; running at least some fire damage is good because it procs Burning Spellwave and helps proc Ilambris, as well and inflicts enemies with burning status
    - In single target fights inferno is better on front bar because it boosts single target DPS
    - If you are running with magicka DKs engulfing flames will also boost flame damage so all magicka classes benefit from running flame abilities, either native or from destruction staff.

So it's pretty close between Dark and High elf. And after the changes to destruction staff passives the first may actually come slightly ahead in terms of pure DPS.

For solo content the 3% spell cost reduction may be better than the 9% magicka recovery, so Breton sustain is pretty close, and may be actually better than High Elf. The 4K spell resistance is not bad either, especially if you want to go vampire. Dark Elf also has specific resistance to fire damage which can also compensate for vampirism.

    I disagree.

My original sorcerer is a Breton, but I leveled an Altmer for dungeons and so on. Reasons included:
    • Bretons' magic resistance is only useful when you don't have shields up, and is pretty weak even when you do.
    • Altmer magic regeneration is better than Bretons' spell cost reduction in most cases.
    • A large fraction of damage is covered by the Altmer damage buff.

And I don't understand why anybody would pick a dark elf, except for reasons of RP or character appearance.

High Elf has been meta for a long time. Very recently, you have seen a few of the elite sorcs out there switch to Dark Elf. I think on a non-pet build with a front bar fire staff (trials single target DPS), you will pull a hair more on a Dark Elf. If you are running a lighting staff build, which is almost always done with a pet/necro build, high elf is better. A farm build is almost certainly going to be lighting staff based, which makes me want to say high elf.

I dont think you can go wrong with either. Only pick breton if you are okay with a noticeable DPS loss (Yes, its noticeable) because you cant stand pointed ears.
