(Small warning to roleplayers) Abah's Landing

MarkusLiberty

In one of the latest patches, a rather odd new feature has been added to Abah's Landing.

Traveling to Hew's Bane using the Wayshrine (or the travel to player feature) now automatically add you as a member of the Thieves Guild, granting you the Thieves Guild skill line without having officially joined the guild.

This might sound like a bagatelle to most of you, but some of us enjoy trying to creating a character who is completely in line with the law, a pure good-guy character if you will, so this kina sucks.

So I made this thread as a warning to anyone who wants to try to keep their characters from joining the guils, don't travel to Abah's Landing.

I guess you can just avoid the quest and ignore the skilltree. But I see why roleplayers can be annoyed

Suspend your disbelief, it's nothing more than a line of text in a skill menu.

Maybe, I guess it depends on what kind of roleplayer you are. As in you immerse yourself in the world and game and that's about it, or you actually act as apart of the world and interact as such with other players. I've seen roleplayers who are able to imagine some pretty creative stuff that isn't 'there', are you sure you can't look past a line of text? You could try customer support...

I recall that having been like this, well... forever. Visit Abahs landing, get a mandatory thieves guild membership.

And yeah, I hated it when my goody-two-greaves characters went there for the exploration and skyshard... and got thieves guild status.

Wish they would change this, would remove the unwanted TG from any character that hasn't done the TG introduction quest...

Perhaps an alternative questline that lets you try to catch or convince against the TG lifestyle?

In a way, it makes sense. You don't wander into a blackmarket store in the mafia underground if you don't intend to be at least mildly associated at that point.

Having been exposed to the opportunity to pursue a different lifestyle is quite different from actually pursuing it. I expect (IRL) you've had opportunity to steal a car, at some point, but most likely you chose not to.

Linking your unwavering TG 0 skill line should be a badge of honor, as opposed to the possibility you just haven't gotten around to stopping by yet.

I can certainly appreciate the OP's concern on this point. Although I'm not an active role-player I do have characters who treat things differently, so it annoyed me when my holy paladin type Templar who is my main character for completing special event content with was unable to complete the Jester's Festival because a third of the content involving stealing with no alternative way of progressing.

However, given that he has no interest in the Thieves Guild he has simply had no reason thus far to go to that zone. Thanks for the warning tho'.

Yeah, it's not new. I remember pushing during Thieves Guild PTS for the skill line to be unlocked at the end of Partners in Crime and not before. They didn't listen.

I think I have a good idea about Abah's Landing, think of it as Mos Eisley on Tantoine in Star Wars, that location is like a Hive of scum and villainy (or the Pirate Island in the Pirates of the caribbean) and anyone who goes there learns about it, hence the Thieves guild skill line gets added but your character chooses not to act on it (to level said skill line) but has other reasons to travel to the area (insert reason here like= necromantic tomb, skyshards, evil world bosses, needs transport ;) ,etc).

Ehh but what does Kotaro know.. he is just a Master thief

That's odd, because i didn't get the skil line unlocked until today, despite having visited previously. Still, it's on of those annoying things with ESO. I really would prefer if players had more options when ot came to avoiding these things.

It always bothered me how several alliance quests forced players to steal items or break into people's houses.

Having the skill line just means the Thieves Guild is known to your character or that they tried to contact you. Making no guild progress with the skill line maintains your lawful nature. You're fine - nothing to get worked up about.

In a way, it makes sense. You don't wander into a blackmarket store in the mafia underground if you don't intend to be at least mildly associated at that point...
Which I would agree with if it was the thieves guild hideout that gave out mandatory memberships upon entry.
NOT the city in which said hideout, well, hides.

I mean, it may be good for an "offer you cannot refuse" joke, but aside from that... annoying, when one has a character that bypassed dozends of thieves caches because you felt that character would be all honest and lawful good-ish... and then get slepped with a TG membership card just because you wanted to see the sights of abah's landing...
I think I have a good idea about Abah's Landing, think of it as Mos Eisley on Tantoine in Star Wars, that location is like a Hive of scum and villainy...
Except it is not. The thieves den, sure, but the city above has justice-obsessed guards, nobles who call a private security force (the iron wheel) to hunt down evildoers and all that... I mean, obviously not -everyone- who visits is a thief. At least some are going there to bust some thief heads, right? ;)

(And how that made me long for the cancelled PvP portion of the justice system for my goody two greaves characters...)

True perspective. In addition we must remember that "knowing of" and "acting as" are distinct. We do know our enemy, yet our actions are distinct from.

Well, unfortunately there are a few set crafting stations there, so if you're playing a master crafter, there's a chance you'll want to drop buy eventually.

Anyway, this isn't anything more than a minor annoyance. I play a lot of largely text based role playing games, so this type of stuff tend to stick out and annoy me.

I've also worked on a good few modding projects revolving around these type of dilemmas for Oblivion and Skyrim, but I belive these type of things tend to be a much bigger deal to people playing the main serie games, rather than ESO. Either way, it's not a huge problem.

Thanks for all the creative ideas btw ;)

Remember hating that I got DB invitation in Oblivion because you killed some bandits with an quest dialogue before dialogue started. Or by killing daedra in the fight between dark seducers and golden saints in SI.

However I don't see this as an major issue, yes they could waited adding it until you contacted TG and started the first quest.
You have to do an quest to be able to be member.

Hmm, it seems like this would be better from an "RP" standpoint - the only thing the Thieves' Guild skill line gives you automatically is the ability to open those stash boxes. Which means you no longer have boxes out in the world that you physically can't open for no good RP reason. Now the only thing keeping you from opening it is the fact that your 'good' character isn't a criminal, rather than some mysterious force. (oooh, or you could be self-righteous Good, and run around destroying the evil evil contents of those sinful boxes. >:) )

Or at least, that's another way of looking at it. :)
