Tempted to get a 4k monitor, but I'm curious if there would really be any benefit to getting one over my 1080p monior. I have a single gtx980, and my understanding is if I want to get really good performance out of a 4k monitor I would need one with G-Sync, which would require a gtx1080?

A 4k monitor is within my price range, but a 4k monitor with a $600 card is getting a little too pricey for me.

This is a little older, but it does help with seeing how much Vram etc you need for 4k. Looks like my 4gb 980 would be borderline ok for 4k. But really questionable depending on the game I was playing.

This is something you should see to:

Let's face it, gaming at 4K is a premium endeavour. You need a colossal amount of rendering power to game at decent frame rates and such high resolution. Even the high-end GeForce GTX 1080 fails to consistently produce 60+ fps across all games—that pursuit is better founded with twin 1080s at your disposal. With that in mind, it seems fitting that a super-powerful rig should have an equally exquisite monitor to match.

I have a 27 Inch 1080 Monitor and it rocks. I would have to go up to a 32 or larger for it to make sense to go to a 4K, and those start getting pricey. If your coming off a 22 or 24 Inch, the 27 size might be a good bet for you. But, they will make your video card sweat, and tax your Power Supply if it is not up to snuff.

Could you borrow a 4K and try it and see before going down this path of Monitor - GPU - PSU upgrades? With maybe a Motherboard too if you need dual cards to get the performance you want?
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I run ESO on a 4k @ 60hz with sli 1080s. No vsync, because no screen tearing. Usually at 100fps, ultra with med shadow quality.

at that point we're talking 1.5k just for the video cards and monitor. I can wait a few years for the tech to come down I guess lol.

I purchased an HP Omen 1440p monitor (2k) for $300 over Black Friday and absolutely love it. My 980 ran ESO just fine at that resolution, maybe not with everything at ultra, but it still looked beautiful. I upgraded to a 1080 and am able to run with everything at max, except view distance, because that just causes some weird stuttering for me.

Maybe look into a 2k monitor to hold you over until tech comes along and 4k@60fps is comfortably achieved with something other than a $800 video card ? :dizzy:
