Today on Reddit a few ZOS employees held a battlegrounds AMA. For those who cannot browse Reddit or who would like a more pleasant reading experience, I have transcribed the questions and answers from there below. If you'd like to read the thread yourself you can find it just here.

In 4v4v4 battlegrounds How are you going to address certain groups of permablock guard builds (magplars in particular) that require about 8 people to kill them? Currently in open world pvp a group of 4 magplars can have each other guarded, each with 33k health and heavy armor, block cast, and not run out of resources. In a battleground scenario this group of 4 would never be able to be killed.

There are a number of avenues we're looking at. We're not ready to talk in depth on the changes, but we're looking at things like: - CP power adjustments (or if we do CP at all in BG) - Item set adjustments - Regen adjustments - etc...
Ultimately we don't love these kinds of builds either.

Will battlegrounds have a match making rank? How will leader boards be determined exactly? If I play 24/7 and lose a lot of games will I be placed high on the leaderboards due to my play time?

Battlegrounds will match players by level and champion rank along with whether you're grouped or not. Leaderboards are split up based on game type: Team Deathmatch, Mobile Flags and Land Grab. The rank on that Leaderboard is determined by the Medals you earn in the battlegrounds tied to those Leaderboard types. You're place on the leaderboard isn't effected by your win/loss.

What will the penalty/detriment to your team be if you or a team mate lags out or dashboards during a match? I'm assuming there will be a ranking system and your rank will go down? Seems like something that might come up.

If you get booted/disconnect/quit a BG, you'll get a debuff that prohibits earning AP for a period of time as well as not allowing you to queue for BG's in that same time. We're still nailing down the duration of that penalty.

We're leaning towards no CP in BGs right now.
No plans to restrict class numbers in groups. (we want people to be able to get in as quickly as possible)
There are also no artificial restrictions on gear/potions/posions.

We already have a system that tracks PvP progression and really don't want to add yet another system on the side that does the same thing and gives everyone yet another pool of points to track.
TLDR version: the Alliances totally support non-Alliance battlegrounds and encourage everyone to participate to prepare for Cyrodiil. Or something like that.

How are the 3 maps different? Do they have different themes or looks? And are they all located in the same place on the map, or are they spread out around Morrowind, or even all of Tamriel?

Maps are created with various game play flow in mind ranging from open field battles to very tight lanes/close quarters. We take that general idea and apply it to maps in their initial creation, then flesh them out through testing to ensure they still fit those initial design ideals per map. For example, Foyada is very open but Ald Carac is very tight/close quarter.
The first three Battleground maps are located in Morrowind. Newer maps however will be themed on different locations all around Tamriel.

You'll earn AP, XP, gold and leaderboard points if you complete a Battleground match. Medals will contribute directly to your Leaderboard status, but won't be effected by placing first, second or third.
You also have a chance to earn items based on your teams performance and your Medal earnings.

Never say never, but we like 4x4x4 because it is the group size in the game and just makes sense. We did experiment a bit with 3v3v3 - those with long memories will remember that we showed a 3v3v3 battleground at E3 in June 2014. We went back to the drawing board after that and decided that 4v4v4 just felt better. We definitely like the three sided, so I don't think you'll see any two sided battlegrounds.

Hi everyone! I have a few question:
• will addon api changes related to player kills and death statistics also be useable outside of battlegrounds (e.g. Cyrodiil)?
• the groupfinder for pve dungeons has for a long time shown all kinds of problems and to date it is still incredibly rare for me to get into a group within an acceptable timeframe (I usually wait for 15-60 minutes during prime time before I give up). With battlegrounds requiring three times the amount of players compared to a dungeon, I honestly don't see how this will work. Can you please explain what measures you have taken to improve the group finder and will these things also affect the dungeon group finder in any way?
• do you have any plans to create some sort of a "server browser" for battleground games where we can create different rulesets (e.g. no regen, increased ult generation, heavy attacks only), invite friends or set up tournaments?
• any plans for a spectator mode where players can enter a match and watch from the sidelines?
• when will we be able to test battlegrounds at the earliest on PTS? ;-)

Rapid fire answers:
• Not 100% sure on the API changes to player kill/death stats being useable outside BGs. Will have to follow up on that later.
• With BGs - there are no role/class restrictions. The queue will try to put pre-form groups with pre-form groups and then try to match players of equal level together. As the queue iterates over the list of available players, it will slowly relax those rules to try and make sure people can get into games quickly.
• No plans on a "server browser" or the ability to create your own rule-sets for game at this time. Over time we do plan on releasing new game modes / maps though!
• No plans for spectator mode right now. We have to focus on getting the base system in and functional first.

Do you get extra AP for the medals that you get during the battleground, such as most damage done, or healing down etc?
Also, how long is the time-frame before the leaderboard resets, and you get your rewards?

Medals are the things which contribute to Leaderboards and not AP for Battlegrounds. You earn Medals in each Battleground and they are tied to one of three Leaderboards. You'll get extra AP, XP and Gold based on the Medals you earn per match (if you stick around until the end of a match). Leaderboards are 7 day duration.

When people searched the files a while back, there was some datamined info regarding Topal Island, the Isle of Balfiera, and Rayles Catacombs being battlegrounds. We know Topal Island is now a housing location, but are there still plans to have the other two be battlegrounds?

1. Are there any plans to limit or alter what consumables are available for use in BGs? Balance is going to be under a microscope with the smaller group sizes, disparities in access to food/drinks/pots/poisons could exacerbate balance issues.
2. Any chance that we will see new skills lines focuses on the BGs like we currently have for Alliance War? That would be cool.

There aren't any new skill lines for BGs, and from my point of view, I don't know that we would really need them.

I know there will be (an option for) different queues for 1-49 or 1-50, but will there be any amount of "smart" matching in the background?
I primarily PvE and when I do want to try PvP.. I usually don't bother due to the time commitment; whereas I find this quick in/out option better. I just am wondering if it's totally random and I may end up against the Fengrush's of PvPland, or if it will attempt to match people with other.. err... non-existant or low leaderboard scores.

The matchmaking system will look at level ranges and try to put you with players (in your group as well as opposing team) that are close to your level. This includes CP as well. So you should be put with players who are close to you.

Players will be matched against other players of similar level and CP rank, but if there's no one else in the queue to match that criteria, the queue will expand it's search and you may be matched up against players of varying ranks and levels.

We have several dials for matchmaking the queue that checks both level and Champion points to match players against relatively the same levels but will expand the search if needed. Groups will be matched against other groups and if needed there will be solo players pulled in to fill out the gaps if necessary.

Specifically not liking those builds either, but builds like that are a direct counter to how this game has turned to a burst meta, will that be tuned also?

Because it is inherently more balanced and adds a chaos element that 1v1 does not have. In a 1v1 situation, the team that is just a few percent better/more organized/etc. is always going to win. But in a 1v1v1 situation, there's another team to provide some cover and potentially overpower the better team with the help of the third. Basically it's more exciting not knowing when/where the 3rd team is going to pop up and make things interesting.

Will leaderboards be split up between group & solo queue? This is a problem that plagues other online Arena games that can't effectively do this (Dota 2 for instance) where underskilled players are paired up against players who are significantly better than they are and are basically the anchor on the team.
I understand that this is probably not the original design and it seems you have managed to have reasonable leaderboard requirements, but an underperforming player in a group of 3 high performing ones will traumatically slant the battle in favor of the opposition.
This goes the other way as well. I could be high ranked solo, group up with some complete noob and stomp as well.

Rewards for Cyrodiil are not the same as the rewards for Battlegrounds so if you still want the items via Campaigns, you have to do Cyrodiil to get those. Battlegrounds are meant to scratch that 15-30 minute itch for players that want a fast game, where as Cyrodiil is meant for players that enjoy a warzone and larger battles. Both have a solid place in ESO and we will support Cyrodiil and Battlegrounds.

Any medal you earn will lead directly to the Battleground ending as Medals are only earned by doing actions which are tied to actions associated with the Objectives of the Battleground.

Is there ever going to any counters to Health Recovery?
Currently besides Meatbag catapults nothing else in the game can impact an opponents Health Recovery. And the result is Troll King and similar setups with Orgnum's scales are incredibly potent atm, because builds are getting up to 5,000 (sometimes 6,000+) Health Recovery and defile, silence, crowd-control, nothing stops it since it's passive recovery that kicks in more or less automatically.
This is relevant to Battlegrounds, because those builds are already difficult when you can Xv4 people in Cyrodiil (with Meatbags), I don't know what players are going to do when it's 4v4v4 with no siege.

There are no roles in BGs... its more first come, first served.
That being said, there is some sorting of the queue - we try to put groups vs. groups and then match players up against players of similar level.

    Also with all the talk about medals, I wonder if these can be abused as easy as in SWTOR where you just spam heals while holding a location for your "healing medals" and boost to best rewards end of match.

    The lack of talent/skill/success based matchmaking is disheartening as it is a major defining factor in creating fun matches for all competitors. Level and CP as indicators are not worth anything in that regard.

    Lower end players will complain about getting smashed, high-end players will complain about having to fight through unchallenging matches where the end result is clear as soon as the fight starts. 3-Way matches wont change that, beating 4 or 8 uncoordinated pugs with a highly experienced and coordinated 4 man group isn`t really a difference.

    You have to rebalance ressource poisons, sorry to be so clear. But no CP in combination with ressource posions is not a fun playing experience. They will be madatory in bg`s and ruin fun for everyone.

    The worst part is when it finally puts you in a group, your healer turns into a werewolf, your tank has 14k HP and the dps is heavy armor, using a restro staff and a two handed sword on the backbar. Then comes the 15 minute penalty before the cycle starts anew.

    Rulz of Morrowind:
    • The first rule of Morrowind is: You do not talk about Morrowind.
    • The second rule of Morrowind is: You do not talk about Morrowind.
    • Third rule of Morrowind: Someone yells NDA stuff, uploads images, streams, the game is over.
    • Fourth rule: only invited players can test.
    • Fifth rule: one invite at a time, fellas.
    • Sixth rule: crying or bashing on pts.
    • Seventh rule: NDA will go on as long as they have to.
    • And the eighth and final rule: If this is your first invite at Morrowind, you have to play.

    Now that sucks completely. Level and CP has nothing to do with the difficulty that opponent will present. I was dreaming of a system like WoW Has, where for a ranked match, you need to register your group. If you win, your rank goes up and you are matched against a similarly skilled group. If you lose, obviously your rank goes down and fights get easier. Major rewards are given by the end of the week, based on your rank.
    Why so lazy ZOS? This system that you have will create a lot of frustration. Newbie players will right away be matched with top tier trolls while best players will not get any challenge at all. This will make people quit before you notice. Someone in ZOS makes very poor choices.
