So I haven't really played much PVP before and I created a Magplar for this exact reason! Can anyone recommend some sets which might help me at least kill someone in PVP? Thanks in advance!

My limited experience, sets will only enhance your playing abilities, although they are important. Try doing a search on the Internet for Alcast and Deltia - they have some reference "builds" for PVP.

There are three main sets that Magplars commonly use for damage.

    Soulshine
    Kagranec's Hope
    Spinner

Soulshine will give you more damage than Kag's, but Kag's gives you a little bit of sustain and utility, and also has the benefit of boosting your healing spells.

Spinner you would use as a secondary set, as a Magplar usually wants to be in 5 heavy. It's not that light armor Magplars are bad, more that they have better synergy with heavy than light.

There's also Rattlecage, but unless you are absolutely desperate for a skill slot, I wouldn't reccomend it, as Soulshine and Kag's are usually stronger.

Then you'll want a monster set.

    Valkyn Skoria
    Grothdarr

For PvP, Skoria is usually better than Grothdarr, because it has more burst, and it works at range. Grothdarr is acceptable until you get Skoria, but it requires you to be up in your target's face.

Then you might want a sustain set.

    Seducer
    Lich
    Warlock

Lich is stronger than Warlock, but Warlock might be more practical if you want Mist Form. If you want to run a damage set as your secondary set, then go with heavy Seducer.

Pick and choose from these to your liking, and you'll be in good shape.

There are a lot of good builds out on the internet, I personally prefer this one:
    http://tamrielfoundry.com/topic/guide-soul-jabber-magicka-templar-pvp-build-for-one-tamriel-update12/

Another build I found on the forums is this one:
    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en-GB/discussion/318706/magicka-templar-pvp-build-homestead-applesauce#latest

I am not an expert concerning pvp, but maybe this might help you
Some more research might be required but I think it is possible to actually kill some people with one of these builds.

If you want to run a jack-of-all-trades Magplar, and hate grinding dungeons, try using Julianos and Magus. Pairing them with a monster set will allow you a pretty inexpensive way to be competitive and still rock 5 pieces of heavy armor.
