In another thread (where a player was concerned about queue times for dps in the group finder), I pointed out that the core ethos of an MMORPG is one of building social networks of people to collaborate for shared goals. Innovations like a group finder (something that came along decades after the genre was created in text MUD's) are meant to give some options for solo players who still want to try their hand at group content, but an MMORPG will never be a game like Overwatch or Call of Duty. There is no way to shoehorn a social, roleplaying game into an instant-action game where you jump from map to map with random people.

Starting with World of Warcraft (somewhere around Wrath of the Lich King, I think), MMORPG's have increasingly adopted elements that made them feel less like traditional RPG's, and which accommodate the desires of players looking for elements that are more common to FPS-gameplay. PvP has been given a larger role. Character development and class trees has been homogenized (less so in Elder Scrolls Online than in World of Warcraft, thankfully), and solo play options have been significantly augmented. As an example, in Asheron's Call II, I can remember zones that it was simply impossible to traverse without having at least one other max-level player with you.

Nonetheless, at its heart, an MMORPG is always going to have some elements of an RPG. You will need to build a character over time, and doing so will require making choices about skills and equipment. There will be a larger context for your character's actions, one tied to a deep lore and, ideally, quality storytelling (an area where Elder Scrolls Online excels). And, to take full advantage of the content, you will need to establish friendships and build relationships with other players, working collaboratively toward common objectives.

For my own background, I've been playing roleplaying games since pen-and-paper days, CRPG's back to WIzardry I, and MMO's since text MUD's, so I do think of MMO's as large-scale RPG's, with minimal expectations of things like dungeon matchmaking.

I'm curious to know what background other players have, and how that influences their opinion of the strengths and weaknesses of Elder Scrolls Online.

I played Sega Genesis, Nintendo entertainment system, super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, PlayStation 1, a little PlayStation 2. After that, stopped playing consoles and evolved over to PC games. First mmorpg was WoW back in 2005. Still play it off and on.

TESO needs a wardrobe system badly. Something similar to WoW's tmog system would make this game one of the best mmorpg out there!

I've played since the pen and paper days. I started out in 1995 with Gemstone 3 on AOL dial-up and then moved to dragonrealms and stayed in that for quite a long time. The first graphical mmo I played was Asheron's Call and then Dark Ages of Camelot. After that I jumped into many of them. I was in WoW on day 1 when it got overwhelmed and players were doing the knee slide everywhere because the lag was so intense, lol. I actually skipped everquest completely. I do really really miss City of Heroes, but the potential successors coming out are an interesting thing to see.

I like to play a bunch of different current ones (except WoW, I went back last summer and it is sooooo dumbed down and basic its like they're trying to get it to work on androids and iphones or something) just because my mood changes a lot, so I have lifetime subs with a few and have been playing ESO for about a month, again. (I started in beta but got bored in the early days and left for all this time until last month)

I played DAoC as well, because I loved the classes and the lore, but lost interest because I don't like PvP. I always wanted my character to be able to experience the other factions' content. I'm so glad that ESO learned from DAoC's mistake.

Oh, the grind in EQ was brutal. You could play all night and not see your experience bar move.

I have never felt the need to grind in ESO. It's always felt like there was something interesting to do, and the XP has always come naturally.

I also played the previous three Elder Scrolls games.

Games I still play on the side are Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Nioh, Final Fantasy 15, Destiny, and I used to play C.O.D. until Advanced War Fighter came out.

Also my favorite fighting game is Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3

Interesting, I know Mark Jacobs wanted a RVR centric game, they are working on Camelot Unchained where they are going to remove PVE content altogether and just focus on RVR. Were you MID, HIB or ALB? I lost interest after trials of atlantis, leveling gear to me was just stupid.

I should have voted Other really, as my gaming goes back well before online MMOs and includes text adventures (written as well as played) and CRPGs including all the TES games. Online, however, I played text MUDs and most MMORPGs since The Realm and with EQ as my "first generation MMORPG" favourite since beta in '98.

Been gaming lifelong, since Pong came out in the 70s. Had Atari 2600. Had very early home PCs (Commodore 64, TRS 80, clunky old IBMs that ran on DOS and Basic). Started tabletop RPGing in 10th grade, and published a couple games through Chaosium. Now I'm exclusively console (PS4) at age 52, and gaming with my children. But ESO is my first MMO. I was mostly playing GTA Online since it came out until I got ESO in December. Now I'm not playing anything else. I even pre-ordered Horizon Zero Dawn and haven't touched it yet.

I got ESO because I loved Skyrim but finished it in 5 weeks and don't like to replay story games very much so ESO was a great next step. I prefer solo PvE but knowing the option to play with other people exists is very welcome. My only complaints about the game are the lag spikes and crashes, and then some of the chat is ugly. I think my main beef with the game is the few seconds delay after killing something before I can harvest a mat sitting right by the corpse. I've lost nodes to other players because of it, they'll wait until I've killed the mob then grab the node before I have the ability to.

I tried WOW for a couple hours on 2 separate occasions and could not get into it. Only other mmo I've played is without the rpg, Need for Speed World.

I first played Skyrim and loved it (my favorite game of all time) so I tried Oblivion and liked that; even went as far back as Morrowind and loved that too (no idea why Morrowind fans hate Skyrim.)

I think I have the correct poll option, that made my brain hurt.

I played pen and paper RPG's, CRPG's and got into MMO gaming with Ragnarok Online which whilst is pre-WoW it's not really one of the "hardcore" old school MMO's I think OP was going for.

I still do pen and paper RPG's (GM for Pathfinder), CRPG's where they come up, MMO's I've been all over but am very happy settled here now (though I miss a lot of the Spaceship stuff from EVE).

My first active MMO has to be DAoC as I played Everquest but back then, I was on dial-up so play time was extremely limited and having to share a Pc with my entire family made it often impossible.

DAoC released after I built my very first gaming pc and while in college we had a T1 line
Before then I was a Quake LMCTF guy in terms of online games.

I also played RPGs ....Diablo, Diablo 2, Lineage and EA sports games on PC
Before then it was strictly console games

Started with MMO late because internet was to bad until I moved.
Played WOW late around cataclysm. Dropped it because of hard nerf of class,
Only other MMO I have tried is Runescape and a F2P WOW clone before wow.
Played ESO from beta up to VR15, dropped out and started again for 3 months ago.

First thought then I played the eso beta was that it felt like an elder scroll game except that the jumping is a bit clunky.

I'm not an MMO person, but I loved Skyrim, Oblivion, etc. so I gave this a try.
Played some pen and paper games growing up - unfortunately we never owned any Xbox or Playstations. Only got into gaming relatively recently, first with single player Bethesda games, some other RPGs, Civilization series and multiplayer team death match games like TF2, CS:GO etc. Also enjoyed making mods for Skyrim, Oblivion and Fallout 4.

I've tried a few MMOs, but quickly got bored. For some reason ESO is the only one that kept my interest, I suppose partly because of the Elder Scrolls setting and partly because of the 3-way open world PVP combat system. I'm more of a casual player, usually just play solo and not interested in group dungeons or trials.

Dota 2 is the only MOBA I tried, and it was a bit overwhelming, seemed way too complicated for me.

I'm not quite sure how to categorize. I started with D&D pen and paper back in the 1970s. Played the single player computer games until Neverwinter was on AOL for multiplayer. Went back to single player. Did Mechwarrior Online for a while, then got into ESO and stayed. I've tried WoW and the current D&D online, but they both looked too cartoony to keep my interest.

I hate relying on other people, but despite this I've played a few free MMOs like Fiesta Online, Mabinogi, and MapleStory to name a few. Never with other people, though that was the original intent of my trying the games out in the first place; I downloaded one of them at a friend's request, then we never played or talked about it ever again, even if I got super into it.

I'm mostly a solo player, and have played most of the TES series. Were this game not even tangentially TES related, I wouldn't be playing it, most likely.

I played some D&D back in the 70', but girls and cars soon took over my focus. I returned to Role Playing Games as a single player with the early NES versions of Final Fantasy. Since then I have played CRPGs of the single player variety as the grind never appealed to me, still does not.

ESO is my first MMO and I love it. It has a grind, but the grind can be avoided for the most part, especially as I see the truth about gear (that BiS is not is required to be successful). Gaming is my primary entertainment.

As for the Group Finder, I have dabbled with it, but I find groups from the Guild or even Zone Chat to be much better experiences. GF Groups seem to want to burn through the dungeons as quickly as possible. Now I am all for not wasting time, but having to sprint the entire thing is just kind of ridiculous.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
