Don't think my spell damage was even over 2k. My magicka was like 45k though.

Hmm, so it's possible with 2K. I'm thinking of trying a defensive approach by wearing 5 piece armor master (because of light armor shield). Obviously I'm sacrificing max magicka and spell damage, but it should allow me to take an extra hit or two.

I recommend going for the full offensive setup. With a shield, refreshing path and swallow soul you are basically immortal.

Going for a defensive setup does cost you time and nervs because enemies just die a lot too slow and you have less room for improvement once you get it done.

If you want to farm the weapons, max damage setups are really good because of all the time you save (and get weekly rewards on top), if you just want to get through once, you can go for the setup you prefer
