Do you make RP-like decisions for your characters?

I'm curious how many of us make in-game morality or gameplay decisions that affect how we play our characters. I'm especially interested to see how many that do make these decisions but don't consider themselves a role player.
Examples include:
-Your magicka DK ONLY uses spells that say "Flame Damage" in them.
-Your character didn't join the Dark Brotherhood or Theives Guild because they're law abiding citizens.
-You always pick "[Lie]" when questing
-You'll actively avoid the large scale PVP fights because your character is a lone wolf

I'm not a role player but I definitely see myself making a lot of decisions as if my characters were in some kind of story. I haven't necessarily sat down and graphed each thing but all of them have a "purpose." Like a theme, characteristic, or something that defines them. The ability to incorporate so many RP-like aspects (outfits, personalities, quest and gameplay decisions) is a huge reason I enjoy this game so much.

I enjoy RolePlay . It does not bother me what others think or joke about , I have fun . I don't avoid PVP either . Some nights I play in character more then others but I always try to make decisions in character . I don't RolePlay every night so some roleplayers do not fully consider me one of them .

pvp with 8 characters spread throughout the three alliances...whenever I go to fight in cyrodiil - each have different grudges against the other two alliances (AD/DC/EP scum)...

theoretically - if they all ever got in the same room at once, things could get a little heated...

I do. I play each character differently. Helps mix them up.
Not so much skills used but more quest choices and over all theme.

One will do whatever is best for him, the healer is a law abiding citizen and makes the 'good' choices, one will do whatever causes the most mayhem and kill and steal every chance he gets.

I do in other games like Fallout 4, Ghost Recon, Skyrim etc.

ESO is just too cut and dry for me to RP. No real customization, nothing is interactive and being surrounded by players all day long is unimmersive for me, none of the choices have any consequence. I end up speed-running the game to get the most out of my time. I enjoy becoming hero of a zone in 6 hours by powering through it. Honestly for me the game is numbers. Dmg numbers, gold amounts, min-max.

This coming from a guy that has lost himself in his own made up narrative as a military team lead in a zombie apocalypse in Fallout 4(with the right mods, so fun)

Role-players make the world more alive. I love walking into inn, and find some real, non-scripted conversation. I often sit down, have a drink and "listen" for a while.

Other than that, I always make the decisions in quests based on the character I'm playing.

I like making those choices in-game for RP purposes, and I sometimes even go and make backstories and write out character sheets for my characters, but when it comes to actually role-playing with people, I'm not good at thinking of things to say in character on the go like that, so I don't really do it.

My magicka DK literally does only use flame attacks. XD

Adding little challenges like limiting choices, skills, guilds, etc., according to each character's personality and background is what makes the game for me. For me, that is roleplay, not talking to other characters in a tavern.
    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

I do whatever benefits my character. To be fair, I do try to do all options so I will choose characters for the more questionable decisions. But if there are 2 free skill points on the line, I will always choose the skill points.

Absolutely. I make as many decisions in this way as I am able, though sometimes the lack of choice or reasonable alternatives in some quests makes things a little difficult. I'm much more interested in the story and the journey my characters take than I am bragging about stats or 'must have' weapons and armour.

I did, to some extent, care about my decisions up to the final mages guild quest... give up 2 skill points to save Valaste? Uhm, sorry Valaste! :(

Then the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood DLCs pushed me ultimately over the edge.. the only way to make progress is by comitting crimes, even murder? No 'other faction' where, you know, you have to catch thieves and murderers?!
Well, ok.. I didn't want to miss out on that content, so I put my conscience aside and supressed second thoughts about my deeds - it's just pixels and '0's and '1's after all.. >:)

Disclaimer: I haven't actively RPed in a while 'cause my friends don't play that much if at all anymore.

I will always pick the options my characters generally would, even if they're rather... unsavoury.

However, that doesn't apply to questlines. I'll usually just headcanon them out of existence for the sake of useful skills. I know someone who does that, and props to them, but I couldn't do it because skills, and my obsessive need to complete everything.

My current character is evil but most 'choices' are good or a little less good:( Yesterday I could make an amazing evil choice, and I know what's at the end of the mages guild quest :) Also this character only does the mages guild quest since she's a mage and not a fighter. I wish that annoying woman from the fighters guild would leave me alone. She will not do thieves guild cause she thinks she's above petty thievery. She will do DB because she is evil and doesn't mind killing random people xD

Another one of my characters is more 'honorable' has not done the thieves or DB questslines.

And i have a khajit who was done everything because she was my first character, I guess I didn't RP much with her.

Not a roleplayer in the sense that I take part in organised RP with others, but I do try to play my characters within certain boundaries according to their personalities. This impacts what factions they will join, what dialogue choices they pick, and what quests they will do.

So yes, my noble paladin is not joining the Thieves Guild, my ruthless dark mage is not looking for some dude's missing guar, and my against type Bosmer magsorc is not joining Brackenleaf's Briars.

I change my costume, mount and pet when the region I'm going has a different climate.
I emote NPCs, no matter if I'm playing alone or with friends (salute ones, taunt others, helping workers...).
I tried to avoid killing Covenant folks when I did Cadwell (roleplayed I was in a infiltration mission).
I avoid teleports inside the same map.
I make my decisions respectfully with my alignment.

Yes. And almost all of my chars do quests exactly the same way. I am against slavery, weapons of mass destruction, killing when not necessary and similar. That is why I never completed few quests in ESO. Stuff that I did different than what I would do irl are killing mobs and enemies (duh), stealing stuff on a few chars and similar. But I refuse to kill last of the Kothrigi, I liberate Orsimer ghost army on Bethnik and Chimer ghosts in Stonefalls, I liberate prisoners in Shadowfen without absorbing keystone, I let goblins go from mine in same zone, etc. On the other hand, I send Valaste with Sheogorath every single time, sacrifice Sai Sahan and I let King of Worms escape.

I don't RP in the sense of standing around acting out a storyline with a group of other people. But I make up a backstory and personality for each of my characters and that affects how I play them.

Sometimes it's fairly straight-forward - my main character loosely shares my morality so she picks whatever I think is the best choice (even if I know it actually turns out badly) and then I have a dedicated 'evil' character who always does whatever I think is wrong so I can see how that turns out (he also murders people and does all the other stuff my other characters won't do).

With others it's more complicated. My sorcerer is a very noble, law-abiding citizen but having spent most of his life studying magic he's also incredibly naive and is often surprised by how evil and dishonest other people can be. When he heard about the Worm Cult he was amazed there were enough necromancers in the world to form a cult and went to explain to them why necromancy is a bad idea and encourage them to give it up. Which lead immediately into the introduction to the game. He makes similar choices throughout the game - for example letting someone go because they promise they'll repent and stop breaking the law or letting a newly turned vampire have one last moment alone with their family before they're arrested...

Then there's my crafter who doesn't do quests at all because he's retired from all that. Except the main quest because whilst he has let people get away with murder before now his murder is a different matter, and trying to destroy the world is just going too far.

On certain characters I follow the road when I'm exploring, on others they stay well away from the road whenever possible. I use emotes when talking to NPCs. I mostly gave up toggling walk in towns because is so slow it was driving me mad but I don't gallop my horses and I try to go around other people.

The one exception is all my characters open treasure chests because I just couldn't stand leaving them sitting there. Also they're usually out in the middle of nowhere and don't seem to belong to anyone and it doesn't count as stealing, so they may as well.

    Always.

I have three characters I actively roleplay with when I find viable partners, but even the other alts I always consider... "what would that character do?" when it comes to making a game choice.

Some of them will never play through the TG or DB storyline because they are honest characters (and I really wish visiting Abah's Landing for exploration and skyshard collecting purposes didn't come with a mandatory TG membership - change that, ZOS!). Some will play TG, but not DB because while they may on occasion be a bit lax about property laws, they draw the line at murder. And a few, very few, have done or will do both becausee they are just a ruthless bounty hunter, merciless pirate or a evil vampire...

Same for outfits, there are many costumes, but not all of my characters wear them all... same goes for disguises, some of my characters prefer to fight rather then disguise themselves, on other characters I try very hard to avoid any combat whatsoever and skeap past all I can sneak past... even though that may make their advancement a bit slower then it could be...

And it also works for dialogue options. Most of my characters are -either- strong and intimidating, -or- smart and persuasive; only two of them have both persuade and intimidate options available, due to being both smart and... scary in some way. And even so, I often don't -use- their options when I feel they wouldn't... my Orcess is big and strong, can easily intimidate people... but often does not when it would seem unjust to do so.

And none of my "good" characters would ever dream of leaving Valaste to uncle Sheo just for a few measly skill points! Why, that would be completely unjust! While for my more ruthless ones... gimme that book! ;)

I even work on my crafting that way. That chauvinistic redguard alt of mine for example does gear crafting, because a warrior should know how to take care of his sword, but never learns provisioning recipes, because "cooking is a womans job", in his narrow-minded opinion. While my main bounty huntress is a master provisioner and also alchemist... things one needs to support herself out in the wilds hunting down a bounty, be it cooking what she catches, or mixing a healing ointment... or a poison, as the situation demands. (and is really vexed that the game does not allow her to mix poisons into food for... special occasions...). My librarian boy does woodworking and clothier to keep his staff and robes in good repair, but not blacksmith because he doesn't have the muscles for swinging a hammer in the forge - but plays with runes for enchanting instead. My Orcess does all the gear crafting, because she was training to become a forgewife before her banishment, making weapons and armor for her clan, and also has some provisioning skills, but none of that magic stuff like enchanting or potions. Et cetera.

I especially also like to think of backgrounds for my characters, even for those I don't RP with, just to have them. And to explain why they are how they are.
So my ruthless dunmer bounty huntress isn't on the evil side because she just likes being evil, its because she had a bunch of bad experiences in her past, from akaviri invasion to a short PoW experience, and along the way, fell in with some questionable people getting through them, and learned to deal with her problems that way, going from soldier to bandit to bounty huntress and naturally started her career as vestige through taking a bigger bounty job then she could complete.
My shy dunmer librarian boy on the other hand is not evil-ish because he didn't have such experiences, and rather sat among books reading about heroic deeds and such, and while he certainly wouldn't consider himself a hero, he does try to do the right thing... and ended up in coldharbour simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time (he just could not resist taking that assistant job at the imperial library... at a most unfortunate time...)
And my orc amazon is as straight laced goody-two-greaves as any D&D paladin. Which started her adventuring career when she was exiled from her clan for following Stendarr because "Justice!" instead of Mauloch... and convnved her even more to always do the right thing, the heroic thing, to stand up for truith and justice no matter what, help the innocent, pursue the criminal scum, and so on (and she is somewhat disappointed that the PvP part of the justice system was never implemented, I'd have loved to play her as deputy guard, even though with my pvP skills, her capture rate probably would not be all that great... but being outfoxed by criminals -would- fit with her general "painfully honest but not the sharpest knife in the drawer" character, so... heck, I'd have loved roleplaying that too, and letting any "criminal" Player go if they just roleplayed making excuses she would believe... ;) )
