Questions, thinking about returning

I played for a month or so at launch and am thinking about returning, have a couple of questions.

1) How much PvE would I have to do before I could take part in PvP? and actually be useful and be on the same-ish level as everyone else?

2) This game have a level/gear cap? Are they that hard to reach? Does reaching them give you a big advantage?

3) What types of PvP are there besides Cyrodill?

    1. You may have to grind a bit in order to get the gear/weapon drops you want, and that'll depend on your luck. Or you could buy the overland sets from guild stores, or even have something crafted. If you're talking about level, level 10 (min requirement for entering Cyro :p ). You can join the non-vet campaign or Azura's Star where CP are disabled and you're more or less on the same lvl as everyone else
    2. Level cap is 50, Champion Point cap is 600 currently, gear cap is lvl 50 + CP 160. With the exception of the CP cap (which may take a while) it's not that hard to reach
    3. Currently, there's duelling. Battlegrounds have been announced for Morrowind
"Stand strong, stay true and shelter all."

    1. Only have to get to level 10 to unlock PvP. About an hour. You'll be on the same level as everyone else right away. Since the One Tamriel update everything is scaled at champion level 160. The only thing you won't have is champion points until you reach level 50 then start earning champion points.
    2. The level cap is champion 600. The advantage is 600 passive points you put into the champion tree.
    3. For now just cyrodiil, as of morrowind update on June 6, they are introducing battle grounds. And there is also dueling right now

Like @Tryxus says, go to Azuras Star or the pre-50 campaign and all you will need is some decent gear, and get your skills unlocked. Not long at all.

Wait till you get to 300-400 CP before you go to Truflame. Sub 300 CP characters are much easier to kill there, and gankers will purposely pick you off because they don't like it when their targets have a chance to fight back.

On 3, technically there's also the Imperial City now. Which is small scale PvPvE. It's a different flavor from Cyrodiil.
