I wrote this above...ANY of the components below could be "The" problem. It's not just a Server when you are talking potential redundancy systems, and yes it's an expensive option for hardware sitting idle. And sure they could do it, if we all didn't mind buying more Crown Store crates every month and buying every available house with Ca$h. then after they have finished buying their new homes and Beemers they might decide to invest in redundancy. Oops i got sarcastic there . I apologize.
Also referring to Hardware systems where something "could" go wrong:
Firewall's (NATS, SSL, Failover that doesnt failover correctly, Failed Policy pushes)
SQL Servers (multiple types, stats or indexes not optimized)
Storage farms (EMC etc, simple hard drives full)
Core Routers - A million thjings that could go wrong. Spanning tree loop.
DMZ Routers
ACE Network appliances
CSS appliances
App Servers (lack of purging policies filling hard drive(s)...sooo common)
HTTP Servers in DMZ
Login Servers
Backup/Media Servers running against production resources killing prod systems
DNS servers
Yes, read that and good stuff.
But having just one server for any form of online service is kind of risky.

I can't imagine downtime costs them much.... I'm sure they have an IT contract, I'd assume it includes "after hours" support - either internally, or with their provider... so that's going to be a fixed cost over time regardless of up/down status.
They're not going to hemorrhage paying customers. They might see a small number of people for whom this is the final straw, and they quit - but they're also adding new players every day.
Even IF they offer some kind of compensation for the downtime in the form of exp bonus or something, that doesn't have any cost associated with it...

Exactly - a single logical server. My recommendation is to have two (or more) logical servers, say a West Coast and an East Coast service. I know that's over simplified, but I could never understand why clustering for one logical server is a good solution.
That would be a good question to ask, if ZOS has a traditional data center located with Bethesda or do they subscribe to a IAAS type of subscription (that truly would be costly).

Yeah, we're not talking about a single server when they say "Megaserver". This is dozens if not hundreds of machines and then the same rows of maxed out servers for EU, again for XBOX, another set for PS4, another albeit smaller set for PTS, another set for their testing...
Think hundreds of servers, each server being very very expensive as it is a server class system. Megaserver is a concept but you can see the evidence of multiple systems by the "instances" and having to travel to someone to be in that same instance which means on the same server.0 -
