I've never felt so stupid in a game

As that moment when - after playing for a few days - I finally get the nerve to ask in zone:

"Hey, where do you find the picks and axes to harvest the ore and wood?"

All that ore I left behind ...

    Yeah, I know.

But in my defense, Skyrim required implements before the ore could be mined or wood chopped. I assumed the same mechanism and kept looking for picks and axes lying around.

Actually... Coming from a background of previous Elder Scrolls games, I'm surprised I didn't have the same issue when I first started playing. It's really not that stupid to think you need a pick and an axe. You needed them in Skyrim. It's been long enough that I don't remember if you needed them in Oblivion or other older TES games.

So much potential fun to be had with a question like that in zone chat :)

Glad you figured it out though, your train of logic was valid coming from skyrim hehe.

Fortunately, someone whispered me to go to an ore node and hover my mouse over it and click. Maybe a slow day in zone but I didn't really get the: "You may not be smart enough for this game" answers that, in hindsight, I should have gotten.

/zone is weird. Sometimes it's super troll-infested and sometimes it's full of super helpful folks. I can never predict which it will be on any given day.

So far it's been pretty good but I'm still in my first zone (Khenarthi's Roost). My daughter, who has played since launch, warned me about some of the other zones.

By comparison, I played some early MMOs (back around the launch of WoW) where the chat was so bad it drove me from the game.

Yeah, I found it strange that I needed to carry a pick in Skyrim but not here.
I turn voice chat off and often turn text chat off as well - a lot of rubbish gets displayed in it.

Overall I've found Stonefalls to be the worst for /zone on PC/NA, but since One Tamriel dropped and players of any level and any alliance can go adventure in any zone I haven't noticed it being as bad as it used to be. Maybe the low-level EP trolls spread out? I've also heard from a lot of vets of other MMOs that ESO's in-game community is less toxic than most, but I can't speak form personal experience on that one.

Anyone other than me old enough to remember the commons tunnel in EQ? You need at least a little grey to have a memory of that one.

My experience, the majority of players are pretty good in eso. Some, like me may have a little fun for a minute first, but will help you out. I wouldn't be able to resist sending you to pick at least a few flowers first :)

    Yeah, I know.

But in my defense, Skyrim required implements before the ore could be mined or wood chopped. I assumed the same mechanism and kept looking for picks and axes lying around.

You usually need harvesting tools of some sort for collecting crafting mats in MMOs. No biggie. ESO's a bit different in that way.

Yes. Gw2 required tools to harvest.

Don't feel stupid. There's almost no way to find out an almost endless stream of necessary information on your own simply from playing in-game. Memorizing the endless, contradictory minutiae is a lot harder than actually playing the game. Oddly, I learn yet another small, unintuitive mechanism almost every day still after playing 3 years.

As I recall, Skyrim was the first game where harvesting ore was a part of crafting. I know that the only way to turn raw materials into gear in Morrowind was in the expansions, where there was a guy in Mournhold who would craft armor for you with raw materials and a guy in Solthsheim who would craft Bear and Wolf armor from pelts and a different guy from Stahlrim, but that was it. And I'm fairly certain Oblivion had nothing like that.

I remember thinking how hard it was going to afford a horse in beta, and some time after that cause of the cost to travel, not realizing the timer counting down, and the fact that you could way shrine to way shrine travel for free....
