Help with spell damage

Can't seem to understand where people are getting 3k-4K spell damage. Can't get mine over 2k even with buffs. I'm a Mag Sorc btw. Are there other sources of damage? I know attributes, weapon, passive, and what not but feel like I missing a huge part here. Would CP create a significant change cause I'm only CP340
