What is the best way to earn some quick septims? I was looking through the homesteads, which are overpriced in my opinion, and wanted to purchase one with in game currency.

Well... The best way to earn Septims at all is time travel. Because in the second Era, there are no Septims because the according Emperor wasn't even born yet.
If we are talking gold, I'd say: steal. If you have the dlc, play the Thieves Guild storyline/level up the skill line to get a few buffs. Also spend skill points on Legerdemain.

I don't think the the homes are overpriced at all, to be honest. You only need to save up enough coins _once_ and you can get easily about 100k in a weekend if you are impatient and want to farm like a horker.

Sorry OP but the only Septim is AUGUSTUS SEPTIM great great great grandfather to the future emperor Tiber Septim.

Best way to make gold is probably selling a sword worth 400k?

Steal and fence only green items or better.

Sell stacks (200pcs) of unrefined wood, ore and cloth to high level players.

Go fishing, filet the fish, there is about a 1/100 chance to get Perfct Roe which sells well.

Do all 6 daily writs on multiple characters.

Sell herbs. columbine and nirnroot are hot right now.

Make excess food with provisioning ingredients you find and sell to vendor (basically you are taking something you found for free like saltrice or poulty and selling it for more than it's worth..

If you're new/low level/can't be bothered with getting into a trading guild then stealing is a very simple way to make money. (And you do not need the thieves guild DLC to do it.)

Unless you put skill points into the skill that gives you more fence interactions per day you can only sell 50 items, but even doing that on one character can get you about 3,000 - 4,000 gold, and if you know where to look you can get 50 items in about 30 minutes.

Specifically you want to look for the white, green, blue (and rarely purple) 'treasure' items. They'll be labelled as treasure and their description is just a bit of flavour text. They don't do anything and are absolutely useless to you except for selling to a fence but the white ones are worth 40g, green 100g and blue 250g. I've only had one purple but I think that was 1,200g.

Castles, banks and other big public buildings are good places to look because they have lots of containers grouped together. Ships are good too. The ships in Daggerfall are especially good because there's no NPCs around so there's no risk of getting caught.

Ok it'll take you a long time to save up enough for one of the large houses doing it that way, but for a small or medium house it's not bad. And most importantly for me it doesn't take much time each day and it's very straight-forward.

Making money in this game is so easy because 95% of the playerbase has no interest in preserving their fortune.

No, why would I? It's not like I need to save for my characters retirement or their future children or whatever. They're not even going to have an unexpected bill or have to replace something that broke down (unless you count armour repairs). Hell they don't even need to eat or sleep.

So what's the point of saving gold?

Ok sure occasionally when something like housing or a new motif comes along having a lot of gold stockpiled means you can get in early and be one of the first to buy it for 5x what it will cost a couple of weeks later. But no one else is going to care that you did that so unless you really can't stand waiting it's better to just start saving up for things when they're released and let the price drop to meet you.

Buy a small/medium house. Trust me, you don't have time to decorate a large house anyway if you don't spend a lot of time playing.
