I agree. When viewing a picture or watching a movie these effects can be cool.
But when playing a video game I find they just don't work as they should, primarily because they try to mimic the effect our eyes experience while changing focus and moving quickly.
Problem is our eyes watching a screen is not the same as our eyes watching real life. Depth of field effects in most games work by blurring the area where the reticule is not. But our eyes are not usually where the reticule is, but the game has no idea where our eyes are actually looking. So while you are looking around the screen you end up looking at a blurred area unless you point the reticule right at it.
Same with motion blur. It is meant to mimic the blur our eyes experience when we turn our heads quickly. But that just doesn't happen in a game where most people play 3rd person. It's just looks unnatural.
Similarly, I hate 3D movies. In real life your eye focus just doesn't change all that much. If you are driving it tends to be pretty much on the road or on the dashboard. Playing a game it tends to be at the TV/monitor and doesn't change much. When watching a movie the depth of focus changes constantly, as scenes and angles are stitched together. Your eyes are constantly having to move focus from close, to far, to mid, close, to far, over and over. Gives me eyestrain after 15 minutes, lol.
Thank you for reading my essay.
