Logic of "A Friend In Need" Housing Quest

I've done the housing quest for the free apartment 3 times now (1 for each alliance - eventually I'll do it on every character I have just because), and I feel that some of the logic behind it is a little bit... odd.

For those who haven't yet done it, this whole post is going to be a spoiler, but it's a simple quest so you may not care.

First, you find a notice about a home listing and go to inquire about it. So far so good. The guy you meet (Canthion) tells you he's had a problem with a tenant (Bulag) who was involved in illegal activities and made off with the deed, and he wants you to find this individual and recover the deed, because it's made him look bad. Fine.

Well you go through finding out where Bulag went, tracking her down, and getting the deed back. OK, no problems. Now Canthion is just going to give you the deed to the apartment as long as you can prove to him that you're willing to be a respectable homeowner and make the place livable. Well this part is a bit shaky, because what's really in it for him? Fine though, you could say his reputation in the community is really important to him and he's willing to just give you this apartment for free as long as he thinks you'll reflect well on him and his reputation will be restored.

Here's where the logic becomes a bit stranger. In order to prove that you won't just be using the place to run skooma or something, you need to show up with a piece of furniture? Any piece of furniture? I mean, I'm pretty sure that putting a bed or a crate or something in an apartment wouldn't stop me from running skooma out of it if I wanted to do that... But fine, I guess it shows at least a little in the way of good intentions. Except...

I happened to get a piece of furniture from the Dark Brotherhood shadowy supplier before I did this quest. A vial of poisoned blood. That's what I used to complete the "showing up with a piece of furniture to show that I'm not planning to do illegal stuff" part of the quest. Why did showing up with a vial of poisoned blood convince Canthion that I don't have any nefarious plans in mind?

Man, that guy's an absolute sucker... :p

lol yeah, that would have been pretty bad too. I'm pretty sure this guy would have just taken it in stride though.

Me carrying a vial of poisoned blood: Does this convince you that I'm a respectable member of the community who is certainly not involved in any illegal activities?
Canthion: Oh, you must be a doctor trying to find an antidote to that poison. Fantastic, move in as soon as you can!

Me pushing a wheelbarrow full of corpses: Does this convince you that I'm a respectable member of the community who is certainly not involved in any illegal activities?
Canthion: Oh, you must be a coroner who takes his work home with him. Fantastic, move in as soon as you can!

No wonder the guy ended up with a criminal living there first!

"Oh, what, this? It's... uh... medicine. Yes. I'm a doctor, and these vials are all full of medicine."

I found a human skull in a priest's pocket the other day. I should have one of my characters approach him with that, just because you know he wouldn't see an issue with it. :D

But yeah, the tutorial quest is a tutorial quest. Best not to overthink those. :)
    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

(Signature idea shamelessly stolen from Abeille.)

I was about to say that the item I had on hand that satisfied the quest was stolen off of some poor law-abiding citizen and hadn't even been laundered yet, but you might have me beat with the vial of poisoned blood.

I did also like the fact that you can lie about not setting up a skooma den.

As long as it isn't skooma, Canthion doesn't care. Stolen goods? Fine. Murder weapons? No problem.

But skooma brewing? Canthion is a very nice mer, but he has to draw the line somewhere.

Poor Canthion. He is just too trusting.

Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

Ok I was going to say it does actually make sense (in a sort of flimsy 'blatantly a tutorial' way) right up until the end. But yeah, you got me there.

Maybe he's just that desperate to be rid of the place that he doesn't want to start over again?

And on my end it's no big deal that the place used to be a skooma den, it's a step up from at least 3 previous TES houses that (as far as I know) no one was murdered there...and if they are they aren't still around.

I wish they would put a bit more thought into these quests. Even if he charged me the incredible sum of 100 gold for the room it would make more sense. Here is my cheap ass stool I just bought, yes its crap but you trust me enough to GIVE me your place.

If they need to allow us to recoop the gold how about on one of the quests where I save the kingdom you give me more than 300 gold, up it to 400 , problem solved.

Does anyone else imagine their is an old fashion DnD player in ZOS banging his head into his desk and shouting the same things - "they just saved the king, he can afford more than 100 gold and a crappy green sword that's less than they got given half way though the quest when they returned to the servant who was dying who happened to hand over 600 gold just as the mid quest reward this is stupid".
