Why are 80% of the houses in some weird outside area nobody ever goes?
It kind of makes me feel disconnected from the rest of the world. Those houses feel so lonely...
I wish there would be more houses in the big beatiful and lively cities. Where they have pubs, music and inhabitants.

I think you just answered your own question.
ESO is plagued with lag. Some towns are so bad I don't go into them unless a quest requires it. Putting houses in towns would exacerbate that problem.
One of their probable but unstated goals with housing would be to reduce traffic in towns. With crafting stations, banker and merchant assistants any house is almost as good as a town. All they'd need to be perfect is crafting assignment boards, repair and guild bank options on the assistants and a horse feeding NPC.
And with the larger houses, guilds could gather and have quite a bit of fun in them I'd expect.

I want to play an MMO. Fix the lag instead of putting my house into the desert where it's only me and the scorpions.
Besides there are many cities not that populated but still there is no house. Take Marburk for example. Great city, few people, but no house.

Gardner House is your solution. It's a 3-storied slice of Breton luxury and comfort, neatly tucked within a sprawling urban landscape with immediate access to crafting stations, stables, a large inn and a wayshrine. When in the courtyard of Gardner House, one can hear blacksmiths hammering away, hooves landing on cobblestone, nondescript voices, birds chirping, wind cascading through the rooftops... all just over the high stone wall surrounding the courtyard. Wayrest feels alive. For an urban vibe with all nearby amenities and an *enormous* amount of comfortable indoor space, Gardner House can't be beat.
Tell me about it, OP. Marbruk is my fav city, looks so beautiful. Wanted a house there so bad. What did they do? Put a house OUTSIDE the city to mock me. :'( Not buying that one. What for? I wouldn't be living in Marbruk... I'd be living next to the road to Marbruk with no view of the city. Meh.

Ugh duh its right outside the city. Look at the layout of the town. The residential district is mostly outside of or near the entrance of the city. And Cliffshade is bigger then the box houses so of course its gunna be right outside the city walls. Its still part of marbruk and there is no yard so who cares about the "view"

I want to get away from the 10 million derpers dueling/spamming powers near crafting tables/undaunted area.
Honorable mention: Getting far far away from amateur rappers on voice chat.
What is up with this thread? Look at collections -> Housing. A good portion of small houses and apartments are IN cities and towns.
- Skywatch
- Daggerfall
- Marbruk
- Baandari Trading Post
- Mournhold
- Wayrest
- Windhelm
- Sentinel
- Elden Root

That's already 25% of the houses.
