Title basically..

Returning after 2 years or so away from the game, want to start with a fresh char, How does Magplar compare to Sorc, DK and NB using magic?

Do they have a spot in end-game?

Yeah. Healing in. Blazing shield trolling in PvP (although I would call that a healthplar) They are fine with damage as well. I would say that just know that healing is your main defense outside of healthplar because mobility and CC options are lacking.

    Okay thanks,

So, speaking purely on DPS terms, do they lag behind then? If I wanted a DPS role, would my best bet be using one of the other classes?

For PvE I believe they were top dogs up until this last patch but someone else can probably explain better since I don't really focus on that and worry more about practicality in PvP. This last patch yesterday nerfed Radiant Destruction by 21% damage and that seemed to be a big source of damage at 50% health and under. Backlash got buffed a little bit and it is working for me for some burst but I can't tell you if that made up for the loss of DPS a PVEer lost. I doubt it.

Not knowing where the classes where before the patch, and now after, is making an informed choice pretty hard, I don't wanna gimp myself before I've started.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep scouting about for info

Currently #2 in PvE DPS, #1 PvE Healer, and still almost certainly the best PvP spec for Magicka. Magplars are an extremely solid choice.
Lilelle Adlis - Dark Elf Dragonknight

Vaynothah Sailenar - Dark Elf Templar

Sherivah Telvanni - Dark Elf Sorcerer

Nephiah Telvanni - Dark Elf Nightblade

The pvp aspect depends on how you want to play. This current patch magic dk's are the FOTM. Magplars lost the stun from blazing spear and @Wrobel doesn't understand how worthless a disorient is for a class that uses dots to buff up (entropy & reflective light). This change has made playing small group magplar much more difficult and solo magplar nearly impossible.

As far as PVE goes, @Alcast has some informative youtube videos discussing magic and stam dps in pve.

Templar Def work very Well in pvp and pve. But in pvp They mainly work as a support/heal and dont work that Well solo imo.

Sorc is atm the strongest pve dps class and also best at solo pve. In pvp they are probably the strongest solo class and work very well in groups of all sizes as dps.

Magdk is also good as pve dps and works Well in group pvp. But lack the mobility in solo pve.

Mageblade is the hardest magica class to play atm in pvp IMO and weakest in pve from what i have heard.

I only play mag sorc these days. Btw mage blade is hard to pvp but pve it is pretty easy to get same or better dps as magika sorc. I have a mage blade so say that from my experience.

I played a ranged magika Templar on the pts whic I have never used before. Pretty strong class as far as survivability but lacking in dps. All they need to change is reduce initial damage of dark flare and remove cast time and I would be happy playing the class. They just don't have a good burst ability besides Jabbs. All seems sub par.

Yeah, the stun removal on Blazing Spear is far from ideal, but there's a workaround: Volcanic Rune. After its buff, it deals far more initial damage than Blazing Spear, grants Empower, and boosts your Magicka and Magicka Recovery while it's slotted. It might not be as long-lasting of a stun as Blazing Spear was, but it's more than enough to give you some breathing room.

Magplars are still a very, very strong class. They can heal to full on demand, they have two of the best spammable attacks in the game, the best execute, the best purge, and even reasonable mobility in the form of a decent gap closer. Compared to Dragonknights, while they don't have CC, they do have a lot more burst and a lot more healing power. The lack of crowd control hurts, but with Volcanic Rune to help shore up that weakness, as well as the tremendous staying power and killing power of the Templar's kit, I'd say they still probably pull ahead of DK's in PvP.

That's half true. They are the best healers in the game. But mainly healers? Definitely not. They were the king of PvE DPS last patch, and they are still extremely strong in that role this patch, while also having the easiest rotation.

Volcanic rune takes a second for the rune to actually show up on the ground along with the cast time. It's not a good replacement. I tried it. Have you?

Toppling charge is buggy as hell and far from reliable.

Also, dk's have arguably the best self heals between the new dragon blood, embers, flame lash, and deep breath.

Yeah agreed templar works great as dps in pve. But in pvp They work more in a support role. But They still have some good dmg in pvp but They just work better as heal/support and are not that good solo imo.

If you run a soulshine set your 3 hardest hitting abilities become very powerful. Dark flare is awesome range PvP ability, high damage, aoe heal debuff, and empower. One of the better survivable magicka builds if you're a vamp.

    Thanks for the info guys.

I'm gonna play them all, get a feel for what I like best, I have this annoying OCD and the need to min/max, but I also never like doing the popular thing. Which leaves me in an awkward spot oO.

So Mageblade sounds interesting, if they can pull their weight in PvE, that's good, I can focus on PvP once I've re-learned the game again.

The problem with magicka Templar in PVP is; while their channel and cast spells are powerful as someone said, they still are channeled or cast. It's already the slowest mobility class so that leaves you to just get run around.

Even some of the instant support abilities have slow animations so you better be on your animations cancels, which to me; compared to other classes, often feels clunky. I think a lot of that has to o do with those Channels like biting jabs breaking my rythm.

Then as mentioned; lack of CC options. I actually think Javelin is fine but the magic version needs to be as long as the stam duration. We are completely missing a mez that goes through block, and a class root.
