I'd like some way to retrieve furnishings when you don't know where they are

While trying to place a carpet, I accidentally clicked while the carpet wasn't visible, and now it's disappeared somewhere in my floor. Can't see it and can't move it. This wouldn't be a problem if there was some way you could get a list of items in your home and move them into your inventory

You can.
Browse your inventory, across the top there'll be four icons, one of which is "retrieve" (an arrow pointing down into a box) - double click the item you want to retrieve. Job done.
