When choosing which house to buy it might be good to consider what it is going to take to funish them because most funishings are not cheap in money or time and the bigger the house the more it will take to get to that "finished" state.
But it wouldn't be fun if your house were finished right away. It needs to be a project. Otherwise we'll all get bored with it after just a few hours.
Having something you want to accomplish is a good thing. Makes you want to return to the game and complete it.

Yes, just like in life, consider the total costs of ownership when selecting a domicile.
A friend of mine in real life came into some money and bought a big house as he could "afford it". Well, filling it with furniture proved to be a daunting task so that only about half the rooms had anything in them, and not much even then. Of course his first set of utility bills (it was a hot July) made him scream as they added up to 4 figures. He was not a happy camper with his purchase.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

From what I read, if you are using crowns then the furnished houses are a pretty good deal imo. I believe it is only around a 2k crown difference between unfurnished manor and a furnished one. If that is the case I will probably just purchase a furnished one and redecorate it myself.
That's why this one is considering a couple of medium sized houses for location and later one large house for parties and get-togethers. One home can be brought up to live-able standards rather quickly and the others can be longer term projects.
