"Motif" expanded usage?

I've read several threads, and agree to some extent, that motif's are useless because end-game gear is better than most crafted armor. What does everyone think about potentially expanding the role of motifs, in future content, giving them a transmogrification option similar to Diablo 3 and WOW? I personally would love to see this option because it would increase the value of "motifs" exponentially, and provide better customization to player-worn armor & weapons.

I can agree with this. ESO is so much about player preferences and customization. Especially on hard to obtain sets, they could really enhance player experience by allowing players to alter drop set appearance.

My inclination is to say make it a (reasonable) mat sink. To turn your vipers sting jack into ancient orc, you need the style material plus xx rubedo.

It would also be cool to enhance socialization by putting high craft knowledge requirements on the process, forcing players to reach out tomcrafters for this. But it would require a pretty big programming change to allow bound items to travel for this purpose.

I've stated this before. The game already includes options for altering the appearance of existing equipment in the form of the Imperial transformation. I agree that we should have the option of altering an existing weapon's appearance. Feel free to make it expensive in terms of materials and required skills, we'll still welcome the opportunity.

For example, it could cost a progressive number of motif materials based upon item level, similar to the progression of base materials required to create objects at that level (though please, don't make me shell out 150 motif materials to upgrade CP160 items, that's just rude)

I couldn't agree more. In my honest opinion, this system the OP mentions need to be in the game before they try to flog another Crown Store Exclusive Motif.

All it needs now is a costume editor, one that is as robust as probably wildstar or swtor.

It is clear Zos is aware that some people want this and they spoke to it just a couple months ago.
