Old character ID names (@names)

So for the past like 3 months or so (I don't really know anymore) I've been trying to contact the guy owning the @Subversus so that I could talk to him regarding his @ name. I am currently forced to use @Subversuss simply because the other one is taken. Like I even proposed I give him RL cash and/or in game gold (and mentioned that I can give him more than he could ever use). A single reply hasn't come, as you guys might have expected. I am 100% sure the guy with that @ name quit the game a looooooong time ago and is possibly never coming back.

Would it be possible for us to get older account names? Especially now with the option to change @names on the homepage by yourself wouldn't it be somehow logical that ZOS would rename those characters (at our request) to some random numbers so we active players can take them? Like let's say that if you're inactive for say 1 year some other player can take the @name. The victim in this case gets an in game mail explaining what has happened and possible fixes. Like I can't see any reason why people that reserved names at launch that played for 2 hours total and then uninstalled get to keep them...

    what about no?
You did not copyright that name, so anyone can use it. And if that person chooses to quit the game for good or just take a break... well that's their choice, but they might come back and why should they lose their name just because you wanted it?

The next problem: If ZOS actually gave you the name, that would mean you are impersonating an other person, some might know and either destroy their reputation or encountering people that had a problem with the previous 'owner' of the @name

So no, they really should not do that

I don't think it would be in their best interest to start getting involved in who can and can't hold an account name even based on activity.

These names have always been served on a first come first serve basis and it shouldn't fall on ZOS to invest GM time into clearing and renaming accounts become players can't get a name they desire.

As someone who took a two year break, only to come back and play rabidly? No, please. I use this account handle for everything, so chances are it means as much to me as "Subversus" means to you. I would be sad to lose it just because I'm taking a break from the game.

"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

If you were still identified simply by character names I don't see an issue with this. I know Blizzard does it in WoW. If you don't log in for a certain amount of time you can lose your character name.

However since you are only searchable by the @name that shouldn't change, nor should somebody be able to take it. I'm assuming if Zenimax ever makes another online game they will probably use that same @ID just like Blizzard does with RealIDs and what if the person using the name you want plays that game.

you might also want to look into the possible implications of what offering RL cash means in terms of ZOS TOS
it's quite possible you have broken them just by making the offer and in that case you might end up being the one with no account name at all :)

This would bother me a lot less than the usual suggestion - which is to take character names away from other people. I'm quite attached to my account name, I've used it almost everywhere for about 15 years (which is surprising because it's a very common username but apparently other people who use it don't share my interests), but it's obviously not my actual name and it's not my characters name so to me it doesn't have that same tie to my or their identity.

But I know it would really upset some other people who are very attached to their account names and would be extremely upset to lose it. (I've known people to refuse to sign up to a website if "their" name is taken.)

And then there's all the usual practical problems with this idea:
    • How do you determine which accounts are active and which are not? Where do you put the cut-off point?
    • What if the person whose names you take has a reputation, good or bad, and you get mistaken for them?
    • What if they were banned? a) How do you prevent the banned individual simply reclaiming their name and carrying on as if nothing happened. b) What if other people assume (understandably) that you are that guy who scammed them/verbally abused the entire group/was selling gold etc. etc.
    • What if the person comes back? Are they entitled to claim their name back from you or have they lost it forever because they happened to be away when you decided it should be yours?

Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

This might seem crazy, but are you absolutely sure that the other account name isn't already you? I am not saying that to be silly, its happened to me before. I wanted to change my Xbox gamertag, and couldn't as someone already had my screen name, I freaked out, wondering who would do that and when, until about a week later I realised it was myself who owned it, just on another email, I just completely forgot I made it :D

Zos is unlikely to help you in this manner since it's a huge negative for anplayer to return to the game to find he lost his names.

Well, considering the OP doesn't have the double ss at the end... I guess he got the name?

Either way, I'd rather not see ZOS force people to change their ID because another person goes all "omg he dun diddly stole my id name i use for hundred years in gaems!" It would be abused, anyways.

    First come, first serve, IMHO.

I say no. Especially after reading your reasons.

It reads like you being self-entitled. I guess you will just have to deal with the fact you didn't start playing this game before the other player used the same name you wanted. Quit playing the victim card.

I started playing this game like almost at launch, though I was using the name WickedGonzo (which is my login on many other games, thought I'd stay consistent) back then since @name wasn't as important as it is now. Of course I am being self entitled, why on earth would I suggest something that doesn't affect me in any way lol.

Hundreds of people play the game without ever logging onto the forum. Hundreds others use different forum and account names. Your "literally ages" are exactly three months - that's how long you *know* the guy hasn't played the game. Everything else is a baseless assumption.

They did that with xbox live gamertags a couple of months ago. They released alot of names (i think it was 1 million but don't quote me on that), for reuse. But i think those names had been inactive for 10 years or something. If they do it, it's gonna be awhile.

If the inactive player with the in-game name comes back and decides he wants a forum account, he's going to find out someone else is already using his in-game account name on the forum. Then he can add an extra s at the end of his forum name and you guys will be even.

Also no I don't agree with the original idea.
