'Direct Melee Damage' - Selene

Can anyone clear up what this means? I've been testing it with the 2h and it just will not proc off light/heavy attacks or any of the 2h abilitys (apart from the ultimate)
I intend to use velidreth but I need the helm in heavy and only have medium so planned on using Selene until then.

✭✭✭I use it on a tank for pledges when dps is low - bash, light, heavy, and weapon attacks like puncture or low slash work.
The 2H is so slow to weave, you have better chances with S&B or DW.
You also don't always see the bear...

PvP, but if you don't always see the bear that could explain it. I thought sometimes I heard the proc but rarely seen it at all.
