Why do you care about housing?

I'm thinking it might be tied to cultural values. If you're of a certain economic class, you are more likely to see home-buying as an important developmental stage of life, something to look forward to, like women look forward to planning their weddings.

And if you're a certain economic class and intelligence, you're more likely to see that diamonds are intrinsically worthless, cake mixes use eggs to pander to women, and cities with low property taxes as a selling point really don't value education.

Video game housing is not only a permanent sunk cost, it's a sunk cost without utility. I'd rather invest 1.5 million gold into the existing guild market to buy items that will sell for 3 million, than to sink 3 million into a house that I'll mostly ignore by next year while I'm out harvesting materials to make more gold. Gold makes more gold. Housing makes...?

Yeah, somebody at ZOS didn't get the memo that all good gold sinks have some practical player utility that can't be found anywhere else in the game. I need to craft? Crafting station. I need a furnished house? Murder the existing occupants over and over again. I want a scenic view? I know all the best ones, and none of them are coming from player housing.

So I'll get a really cheap house, fill it with a sofa, vintage booze, and a tapestry of Swimsuit Gwendis, then wait for Update 14. But probably not the first part, just the second.

What the point in making more gold just to make more in a game? There nothing really in the spend on game. E

Housing for me was really only ever good in SWG because it served a purpose.
    • You could set up your shop that was connected to the global bazaar terminals. People could search for items your selling and buy them anywhere but had to visit your house/vendor to pick the item up.
    • You could use it purely for storage, dropping pretty much any old item you get inside
    • You could set it up for all your crafting needs
    • and more that I am probably missing

Most MMO's today just slap housing in as something you decorate for fun but completely miss the opportunities it has. I enjoy housing when its implemented properly.

I am always confused on why people always think that housings have to have an utility. What is the utility of questing, pvping, or doing dungeon/ trials? To be honest when it compares to my real life I am not get any from it other than entertainment. The clear answer is because it is fun and entertaining. I mean there nothing to really spend money on in this game when you have already save up a huge chunk of gold and pretty much no need to spend it in guild traders. Since most of the items sold there are just items you do not need or you already have a bunch of them from playing the game.

I'm sorry. I still think you're missing the point about utility. Real homes have utility that can enhance our lives. Especially if you customized your home to do so; and not just for entertainment.

I agree that homes can be a place where people can be social, and decorating IS fun. Not to mention we all like the idea of owning real estate in a videogame especially MMORPGs. But I think ZoS could do a better job making homes more useful. Giving your home a purpose would be ideal, and you would have more of a reason to spend time in it.

I still don't think ESO has rested XP or a Well Rested buff. That would give you a perfect reason to log off in your home or at a inn. Obviously they revealed no storage(yet) which is a huge mistake. You could have introduced jewelry crafting as an exclusive station to owning a home that is craftable out of existing material in the game. Why can't I grow my own ingredients for cooking? Better yet, cooking levels faster while doing it in a home! I got a better idea! If you have the hireling perk from one of the crafting professions, assigning a hireling to a home gives you a change to gain more rare mats during their daily retrievals.

I just don't understand why housing can't be intertwined with the gameplay mechanics.

I'm mostly interested in the practical features, for instance target skeleton, crafting locations. I'm also glad I have a place to display my huge herd of mounts most of which I never ride (Sench Tiger for lyfe)

@reapthetempestrwb17_ESO I hate to be the barer of bad news, but there's a limit to how many mounts you can display.

I was playing around in a manor in the PTS and my limit was 5, which also prevented me from adding the smuggler, merchant, and banker. I did not have ESO plus.

I have had houses in every mmo that offered them, something to do part of the game, gives you a little of the feeling your toon lives in the world and just playing through the world, I think they did an ok job with houses, storage would be nice and a way to display your armor would be nice features.

I will be fine buying something with in game gold, don't buy things from the crown store until zos does something about cheaters in this game.

It's not perfect and it doesn't have everything some wish it would but for me, it's new and it's something else to spend time playing with when I'm sick of slaughtering stuff (considering that's pretty much all you do in this game - even just farming mats, you have to kill everything in the way).

I can actually temporarily put away my battle gear and put on some comfy clothes (such as the interesting mix and match stuff I've stolen that sits in my bank because it's useless for anything other than show) while I spend a peaceful hour here and there in my personal private space, moving things around and creating a cozy living space. I don't need my armor displayed. I wear it all day long while out in the world. I need a relaxing spot with no "outside world" interruptions or reminders. Kind of like when I get done with my job in real life, I want to relax, put my sweats on,, and enjoy myself. Questing, farming and killing stuff in game is kind of like a day job. Housing is off the clock/downtime.

Finding/learning new recipes for furniture will take a long time I assume, giving me something to strive for and something new to look for in the world. Having those crafting stations at my house, trying out each new recipe I find/learn in the comfort of my house, and then figuring out where to put it will be a nice change of pace. When I'm tired of repeat quests and killing stuff, this will be my relaxation time. There really wasn't anything to do before when I got tired of the same old stuff and would just log out. Now I don't need to log out.

I think that's as simple as that.

I'd rather have a lot of things fixed in this game than housing.

That said, I enjoy stuff like this. Building settlements and houses is one of the few things that keeps me logging back into Fallout 4.

Pure gold sink its for players with so much gold and nothing to spend it on. For me i don't play mmo's to decorate a house. I was hoping the inn rooms would be like they have in EQ2. But they are so small that it would force you to spend gold on something bigger. I see a lot of vet.players into this because its something new. I will probably do the inn room quest just to do it. But i won't spend much time in the room at all. The only thing i really like about the update is sitting in chairs.

It's going to be fun for a while. But after that only the target skeleton will matter for me to be honest.

    There is still no:

    New end game content

    True PVP balance changes

    Buff/DPS tracker for console

No doubt housing is going to be interesting. But will it be enough ? Don't think so sadly.

I was skeptical about the Hearthfire dlc which added housing to Skyrim because I didn't really see the point of it, but it was so cheap (about £3) I bought it anyway and I had lots of fun with it, even with the very limited customisation available. It was nice to have a big house to return to between adventures, once you'd upgraded everything there was no reason to visit town you could do everything at your house, I'm hoping the same applies in eso (it looks the case, judging by the notes).

I think this pretty much summerize everything. You can oay 3 euros and do whatever you want and in eso probably you have to pay around more than 100$ for sure for the crown exclusive houses and pay more for costumization and also you have to pay for the extra content and bla bla.
I'm planning to buy a medium house, which I have more than enough gold for. I can just about afford a large house but to be honest they look a bit too big for one person. We're planning to have a large guild house, so a medium one will be fine for me to call home.

I'm going to assume the players who don't like housing/RP/ even PVE at times have pragmatic reasons. It doesn't further YOUR specific playstyle so it's a pointless endeavor. Hell, I know for a FACT that some players have never seriously played another class besides the one they started with, and honestly that's all good. Here's the thing:

This game, like almost any modern game, will NOT be balanced. Stop dreaming, stop fighting for it, it's not coming. Asking for balance every patch is just like screaming in an echo chamber; you just make a racket and only hear what you scream. A balanced game means hard counters for every class which in turn will restrict freedom of choice.

There other features of this game that do not have to support your playstyle. I'm almost certain the writers, asset designers, lighting team, etc. did not crank out hundreds of quests just so you could get better at pve and pvp. They didn't incorporate the entirety of their lore so that you could better smack your face into chalman's milegate all night.

I erased a really dark and paradigm shifting paragraph about not mattering, but instead here is a counter argument. Why does pve and pvp matter? You do the same thing over and over again and rely on unbalanced mechanics and poorly managed servers to do so. I can change my house into almost anything I want and roleplay a new story. You'll still be killing the same salty players and getting killed by the same OP players while I potentially experience a new story every time I step into a house.

I dont care about housing at all. I have had housing in other MMO's and once a house is decorated its done, not like anyone will hang out at their ingame house, no extra storage in the house. Its a waste of time and resources.

I care about housing as I always like to have a place in the world I can call home, figuratively as well as literally. The way things are decsribed though on the PTS forums though I am actually a little worried that housing wont be for me due to very casual nature in which I play the game.

Hope I am wrong though as I love housing, so much that I keep buying more and more houses in the premium shop for LoTRO, but here I am pretty much certain to not be able to afford to furnish a free inn room as I pretty much never get over 10k gold.

If I can port to my house, bank, craft / deconstruct / cook, vendor, repair and port back to where I was, I'll get a house.

If I can't do that, or if doing that requires dropping a bunch of cash in the store for those merchants and bankers and such, I won't bother (I'll just continue to port to the city with the most convenient facilities).

Then again, I'm not in ESO to play some HGTV decorating show online, though I have no issues with them creating such content for those who desire to do so.

Honestly it just seems like another easy way to monetize micro transactions to me.

But I know that some people really like that sort of thing in a game so meh. But if I wanted to get creative and build a real house I would fire up the Skyrim CK and build without creative (or financial) limitations.

it's the property fantasy. for a lot of people it's fun and satisfying to "own" something in a video game; you earned it, built it, use it, and can show it off

of course owning a mansion in real life is *usually* unrealistic for most people, and video games are meant to be an enjoyable escape, so...

The most I've ever had is 20,500 and that was only because I was saving up for bank space. But I don't see housing as impossible to afford, it just means it will take me longer than it will for other people.

There's very little you have to buy in this game. Especially for casual players who can get away with using whatever gear drops, whatever food they find etc. So saving up gold is easy, you're not going to have to keep paying out for regular expenses or suddenly find you have to pay for something expensive.

So you can just decide what you want next and then wait until you have enough gold to buy it. The only problem is choosing what to get first.

    No.

In truth housing does have a few functions. Crafting stations can be placed in them. If you own the banker and merchant assistants so can they (no added functionality for you but good for friends who might not have them).

Obviously housing should have more functions, eg. storage.

I wouldn't say I'm excited yet for housing. It needs a bit more functionality. But it looks very good for what it is now.
