Why is a staff getting a taunt added in? New garbage staff tank builds?

Why? I don't understand this at all. Now desto staff users with tristaff get to be tanks. Fun.

This will lead to three new types of players

Noobs with ice staves that don't realize they are taunting away from the tank. Yay!

Noobs wtih ice staves that know they can taunt with heavy attacks and queuing as tanks. Yay!

Experienced players that know they can taunt with ice staves and actually have a decent build, but are immediately kicked from groups. Yay!

I may have missed some but happy times with group finder are coming.

This means my Cryomancer isn't using heavy attacks anymore :P
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

Oh yes, there will be tears... seriously though, I hope this is either an April Fools Day joke or Zos has a plan for balancing frost staves as a viable tanking tool because the ramifications for this are shudder inducing if they do it wrong.

Oh yes, I'm thinking of how to adapt my Gyda to the change. I really need the PTS to update and to come online already. Maybe making my Ice Mage a Nord wasn't as stupid as I thought.

In case people don't realize, there are mag blades that use ice staves. God forbid they show up at a trial. Have you ever seen Hel Ra when someone in the group that was not a tank had a taunt because the were clueless about taunts? Yeah GFL. This one was an idea they came up with when they were baked on something and thought 'Oh they want a taunt. Let's give 'em one! The Staves don't have a taunt. Let's stick one on the ice staff!"

They had no idea what to do with frost and this is what we get.

You just can't defend this. Giving a staff a taunt makes no sense at all.

Excellent idea! I can see it now... desert rose + beekeepers with an ice staff on a magplar. That nerf to RD may just kill off Templar burst enough to actually make to run that.

EDIT: looking thru guild stores I realized beekeepers is NOT the set im thinking of

They have been slowing making ice staffs into a defensive weapon for months. It is not as far-fetched as you think.

I'd like to think that players that wish to continue to use frost heavy attacks and not taunt can just choose to not take the tri focus passive. Hopefully that will be an option, but I'm not sure if there would be any negative effects if you don't take it.

It's really cool for build diversity. The huge problem that I see is that there are WAY too many ways to get flat magicka returns that will allow magicka-based permablocking while still being able to invest in damage sets. This is going to be hilarious if it goes live.

Magicka tanks are a thing. Giving them a decent magicka-based weapon for tanking is nice. I'm used to using sword & board on both bars for my magicka tanks, and I'm now considering switching to a frost staff on one bar instead.

Don't worry, they nerfed those too. Now we all get a flat 400 magicka return no matter what. Only through magicka return sets can you effectively tank with these ice staff changes.

The beauty of it is that you can have S&B on one bar and frost staff on the other, and if you run out of stamina while blocking with you S&B but still have plenty of magicka you swap bars to the frost staff and block with your magicka, or vice versa.

Seemed weird to me at first, but a frost snare tank build could be interesting.
Would give my Mag tank a new ranged taunt, proc tremor scale maybe, drop wall of frost, would keep the trash snared.
    Worth a test anyway.
