I've seen a lot of posts/guides telling you to use x addon for x thing. I'm wondering if they're totally safe to use or something that will get you banned?

    Of course they are fine.

There is a whole section on these very official forums dedicated to addons and UI mods.

To be clear, we are talking about addons that use the LUA API which is allowed by the game. Not some hack or memory altering program that is not allowed.

You won't even get banned for cheat engine these days. Just go to Cyrodiil and look at all the people that got caught using it that are still playing cause they said "sorry"

I've yet to hear of someone being banned for addon use. The API that addons use is provided by ZOS - including (some) documentation and support. The idea is that if ZOS don't want an addon doing something, they don't provide the mechanism to do so in the API. There have been instances where addons have made clever use of some of the API capabilities in ways ZOS decided they didn't like, and the API was changed to disallow such use (e.g. group damage). That said, ZOS has also stated that using some addons is technically a violation of the TOS (automating with a single action that which in the default UI takes multiple steps). Those addons still exist and are used by a large population of players, apparently without any action on ZOS's part - yet.
