The problem with subs on console is that you already have to pay for PSN to even play games, which is just crazy.
I don't mind ZOS making money at all, and I can also quite easily restrain myself, but I do think it's borderline exploitation when you see some of the posts people make on the forum, chasing a specific item and buying hundreds of crates to get it, seemingly not wholly realizing that what they are doing is no different than playing the roulette in a casino. You are playing a game that is designed for you to ultimately pay more for a single item than what it would cost if you could just buy it directly. It's designed to favor the house at the expense of the player - which isn't a surprise to most, while others don't even think about it because the context (playing a computer game) is so different than standing inside a smoke-filled gambling den.
It is pretty scummy, to be frank.
I think ZOS should be a lot more clear on the fact that it is pure gambling and also list the odds openly, because some people don't seem to fully grasp it. It's ZOS' job as an (unlicensed) gambling operator to responsibly look out for their customers. In my view, they should be licensed like every other entity that offers gambling, and adhere to the standards even Las Vegas casinos are forced to.

PSA:
If you buy crown crates, you are part of the reason ESO will continue lacking actual new content in the future. If nobody purchased the crates, then ZoS would not make money off of them, and they would have to come up with another way. Perhaps they would be forced to release new content in order to bring in revenue (either through direct purchase or subs).
So if you purchase the crates, you are sending a message that the crates are a viable way to earn revenue. It's just a business, and you play a crucial role letting the supplier know what you demand.
cool story bro
Right...HEY EVERYONE! Let's boycott the cash shop, providing ZOS with LESS money, and that will encourage them to...make "more" content for us? Hmmm. Methinks something doesn't sound quite right with that rationale.

What do you want them to do. Be a fully donation only company? That seems to be what people want these days. I should be given everything and only need to give you money if I feel it's needed. You would probably be the first one in line with pitchforks complaining about the lack of content when they have no employees because nobody decided to donate to them.
The content that is being released now was in the works probably during the beta testing phase. They either stop that content to work on fixes for broken systems, or they ignore the systems and push out the content then go back to the broken systems. Either way people are going to be in an uproar when they feel like something they wanted more of or a fix for is not being worked on.
TL:DR - It makes them money to work on the game deal with it and stop complaining.
Every game I've played with a cash shop that starts selling gamble boxes ends up focusing more and more on stuffing random digital trinkets into new gamble boxes and less on producing actual game content - so there must be a large amount of willing people out there that don't mind being milked of real life currency and could seemingly care less about whether the developer actually adds playable game content.
The model is clear - combine a game with a dedicated fan base / strong IP with an addictive product like gamble boxes and sit back and watch the easy revenue flow into the companies coffers.
No wonder companies with few scruples out to make a quick buck with little effort become just as addicted to pushing gamble boxes as the players they fleece.

Entity 1: Ok, here's an elk for 4500.
Entity 2: zomg! That's too expensive!

Us humans 'want' and that is what Zos is counting on (I personally think the atro mounts are awful, but I think I'm in the minority).
I like the elk a lot more than I liked the glow fart senche. It's a personal preference. I think they should offer more variety of mounts in the store for people to choose from, not fewer. That's my main problem with the crates - less choice for buyers.Karius_Imalthar wrote: »Entity 1: Here are crown crates. You pay 400 crowns and receive items of varying value. You know, if it wasn't a horse in an elk suit, and had the same functionality as the other mounts, I'd have already bought one. I can change things on my 2400 crown senche, but not on the 4500 crown elk.The dro' mathra senche was 5000 crowns, iirc, but that one at least had different effects/looks than the normal mount.
For a mount that has the same functionality as the 900 crown horse but has an interesting novel type of look, I'd be willing to pay what the special senche cost. Which was more than the elk.
