Poisons

Say I have dagger with 1300 damage and a fire enchant on it for 1700 damage. I hit with the dagger and do 3000 dmg.
I apply a poison to the dagger. Say that the poison does 500 per second for 3 seconds. Poisons say that they override the enchant, and only hit 20% of the time.
With the poison applied, I'm going to hit for 1300 80% of the time, and 1 in 5 for 1300 + 1500 over 3 seconds.
I'm guessing that I don't understand it completely, because that wouldn't be much motivation to use poisons.
Please help me understand how poisons work, it seems like such a cool idea.

You basically have the right of it I think. I found poisons only useful for selling at early levels.

I'm actually using them now at CP150. The reason is at my level they seem way more potent than enchantments. I'm finding poisons that slow 50% x 10 seconds or damage 700 x 6 seconds. Also, enchantments don't go off on every strike. Not sure the mechanics but I think they have a cool down before they can go off again. When striking rapidly, I'm not getting enchantment effect every time by a long shot.

I went on an old character with alchemy skill, and started playing around with higher poisons and yes, they're definitely way better than the poisons you find all over. Quite a bit better! It didn't occur to me the kinds of effects you can use, I was thinking only DoT type effects. Thanks for the answer.

You're most welcome. The poisons I was comparing were still dropped poisons. I recall the low level ones being silly but the ones I'm finding (drops, not crafted) at CP150 are respectable. I've not yet developed the alchemy skill.
