Created a new character, Stam Dk and wondering what I could do to more damage on my attacks, also how to make like a tank build? What abilities to use?
If you are just starting out then just learning from playing is a great start. You will constantly find items in the game just from killing monsters or completing quests that will help as you level. Builds will matter more at higher levels.
I can only say how it was for me in the beginning. I found deltia's site the best because whilst other sites are good, they more or less assume you are in possession of the best gear and vMA weapons. I can't talk for anyone else, but if I had been in possession of VMA weapons, I wouldn't need to go looking up builds. Deltia caters for people fresh out of Coldharbour and provide easily accessible builds with realistic gear targets.
Another thing I found, it's better not to copy and paste those builds either. When i began playing over a year and a half ago, I was running around with a Templar and had next to no idea about the mechanics behind it, yet I had been running around with that class for a few months. I was running with skill 'X' because someone had told me it was better than skill 'Y', but I didn't know why it was better. I scraped that character and made a new one from scratch and from then on, I learned through trial and error why skill 'X' was preferable to skill 'Y'. You'll basically learn nothing using other people's builds or at least I didn't. I think looking over builds on Deltia is good for getting the general gist of what you should be aiming for, but make sure you know why you're aiming for it. Otherwise you'll be that guy that gets punted from groups and comes on here complaining because it was the healers fault you go down faster than a pair of knickers on a ...

My first character was a disaster and is now my crafter. I picked the worst race possible for the role I wanted to play then leveled up the wrong skill lines. I finished the main and guild story lines with him and did all of the quests in each zone but it was obvious he wasn't going to be doing end game stuff to a level that would be acceptable. I did the build on my own, didn't use any add-ons or search for better builds because I thought that might make me miss out on something.
Looking back it would have been probably more fun had I at least looked at a few builds just for a general idea what to do. I could fix my first character now if I wanted and turn him into a really good tank. I already have a really good tank though so my first will just have to settle for being the master crafter.
If you are thinking about tanking then the weapon and shield skill line should be a priority. When you get the chance you might also work on the bow skill line and the duel wield skill line. That way once your ready to commit to an end game build you will have some choices to play with.
Other than that I would say if this is your first character just have fun take your time and enjoy the sights. Develop a diverse set of skills then later you can specialize.
