The criteria used to determining if your character is still "in combat" needs to be reexamined. As a Templar, I can keep healing/buffing myself after killing all engaged enemies for several minute and remain "in combat". This affects multiple things, but most importantly the ability to mount. More than likely you will end up walking by foot to the next keep rather than using a mount.
