They bought the crates for a chance at a shiny. Theoretically they could have gotten that black mane lion for 400 crowns.
If they put the NOT THEMED items in the store for outright purchase for full price, people would be paying full price, not taking a gamble they'll get a special shiny for a low price. They should NOT put the themed items in the store.

✭✭I spent my sub crowns on a pack of 4 crates. Idk if I'm extremely lucky or what, but I got 3 mounts (Lion, Red Wolf and Guar) and the Dwarf Wizard hat out of those 4 crates. Yeah I think I'm lucky.@ Izaki #PCEU

@Glurin ...No, the Red Pit Wolf and Black Maned Lion (as well as a large number of other items) have never been released for direct purchase. That's one of the big complaints against the Crates; it isn't just the top-level items that are exclusive. You might be thinking of the Clouded Senche Leopard and the Frost Mare. Most things in the crates were never put in the Crown Store before, not even once.Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

All the people who pointed out it was standing outside the stable in the Gold Coast and were asking about when it could be purchased managed to miss it when it was in the crown STORE for outright purchase? People who saw it in the datamined lists with the Ice Wolf and wanted to know when it was coming to the STORE for outright purchase missed it? ZOS never bothered to announce it was available in the STORE?
By the way, the black mane lion was never in the store for outright purchase either. {still not seeing the atronach aspect for the red wolf, black mane lion, or pup pet} Clouded leopard and icicle horse, yes, they were. A lot of the other things, no.1 -

Yeah, you're lucky.
I bought 8 crates and didn't get a mount.
I got 2 pets, the lizard thing and the daedra imp thing. 5 costumes, the Imperial Mage ones(all 3), the black dress, and that dwarf hat.
Everything else was potions and crap.1
