A question about housing

I'm looking forward to housing and the crafting that goes along with it, but I have a question. I've seen some posts indicating that there is no storage area in the homes and it made me wonder...can we actually use the items we put in our homes? Such as, if there is a bed, can my character sleep on it? Can she sit on a chair or just look at it? Can she put a book in a bookshelf? Or is all of the furniture we are supposed to be able to craft for decoration purposes only?

The developers have hinted that furniture will be usable. I believe they've already stated that bookshelves will be usable as well.
