Upgrade from Win7 to Win10 causing huge lag.

I recently updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and now I can barely play ESO on the minimal graphics setting, where previously I played with no problem with personalized settings above high. I'm using an NVidia card with GeForce Experience, which suggests that I continue using the old graphics settings that it had me at before (set higher than high), but clearly this isn't right.

I've searched everywhere for things that could be running in the background that I could turn off. I have the bare minimum of programs starting when the computer boots up (no more than I had when I ran Win7), I shut off all notifications, all background applications in the settings, Cortana is off, OneDrive is off, Windows Defender is off and no other anti-virus programs are running, and I actually have significantly more free HD space than I had when I was using Win7 so that's not an issue. I haven't changed any of my addons and I only run about 6 anyway (nothing like Master Merchant which I know can hog resources, just things like a helmet toggle). I've actually gone through every Windows setting one by one to see what I could turn off and I can't seem to get any better performance. I searched the web for tips on how to optimize Win10 for gaming and found the things that I've already done along with things I don't want to do (like manually editing the registry), which hardly seems like it should be necessary anyway.

I could understand maybe a small performance drop, but this is major. Like I said, I used to play with graphics settings above high and now the game lags heavily with minimal settings. I noticed that the updated launcher also set my client version to 64-bit by default, so I tried switching back to the 32-bit version and that helped slightly, but not even enough to get rid of all the lag on minimal settings. I also tried all these things right after freshly booting the computer, just to make sure there weren't any background processes hanging around from doing other things on the computer over the course of several hours. I also checked all my drivers, my DirectX version, everything I could think of that might need updating.

Is this a known problem? Am I really stuck being basically incapable of playing a game that once ran perfectly fine just because I upgraded to Windows 10?

Are you connected to your modem / box by wifi ?

I noted a very poour performance of wifi under W10

If yes, you can try using a wire connexion (ethernet RJ 45) to your box

I am, but it's not that kind of lag. The screen and music stutter and/or completely freeze up like I've run out of memory or something. Basically the framerate drops to zero.

Had same problem and rolled back to win 7. If its a pc for gaming only i guess it will be better to use win 7 or 8 anyway

Well I figured it out. Apparently, if you upgrade to Windows 10, it can do weird things with your video driver. What I had to do was completely remove any trace of my driver using Display Driver Uninstaller, then install a fresh version of the driver. Now the game runs how it did before.

Actually, this only fixed the problem for about a day and then it was back to the same old 7fps.

I've tried numerous things since starting this thread, and the problem, for me, is not limited to ESO, but to all games that ran perfectly under Windows 7. I've tried called Nvidia, changed all sorts of settings, turned off the GeForce Experience and Xbox video recording overlays, everything that could slow the system down, and none of that helped. I also messed with page file sizes quite a bit and nothing. What finally worked was the following:

    laptopmag.com/articles/set-compatibility-mode-windows-10

It seems that even AAA games have not been properly updated to be fully compatible with Windows 10, or optimized for it, or whatever. I changed the compatibility to Windows 7 and suddenly the game runs about as well as it did under Windows 7 originally, even in PvP with many other players around setting off many lighting effects, which was what hurt performance the most, bringing everything to about 2fps until all players left the screen.

Just wanted to post an update here because I'm sure I'm not the only one experiencing this problem and the solutions I've found all over the net are not really solutions.

The compatibility mode solution actually only worked for a day or so. There is literally no solution for this problem other than re-installing Windows 7/8.
