You will need a large number of these gems to be able to trade for something else that you do want.

✭They are what you get when you buy a crown crate that has a duplicate of something you already got from a crate, you can save these up to buy something you want. There will be another tab that shows items and how many crown gems you need to purchase them

✭✭✭✭✭If you want anything of value, 100 Gems ( I think the good stuff start at ) you WILL need to buy a lot of crates
I did the crates on PTS for a week and only made 150 or so gems ( this was before I bought all the crown store items first )0 -

They may have changed that between PTS and now though. Doubt they'd change it too much. Just like the "you can trade in "several" consumables you don't want for gems, they don't want people to be able to buy what they want. They want people to buy more crates. Getting a large number of gems back is rather counter productive.
