That being said, everything is in the tone and every situation is different. The tone used by the OP sounds very despising to me - but maybe I'm wrong.

Yeah, "condescending" was the tone I got from the OP, too. Specifically the "poor little thing" part.

    @ the OP:
Make no mistake, I think it's great to help out everyone. I'm one of those carebears who will throw heals at people I pass while solo PvEing. There is nothing wrong with noticing that someone is stuggling and saying "Hey, you want help?"

But if they say 'no' or, as in this case, don't answer? Don't help them. It may be that they prefer to get a handle of the system on their own, or maybe they have some sort of personal challenge to play a mag staff-wield in heavy armor or something. Or maybe they aren't even struggling, and you just interpret them as struggling because they're doing something you wouldn't do.

Everyone was new at the game once, which is probably why you feel justified in calling them "cute"... because you were at that point once and surpassed it. But the thing is: sometimes, it's just a matter of people having different priorities or a different playstyle than you do, and condescending to them because of that difference is counterproductive.

tl;dr: Your actions were fine. It's your attitude that makes the OP so objectionable to some of us.

    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

As a 'noob', I feel the need to respond to something here. I've been playing for a couple of months now, but this is my first ever MMORPG. I love it and I'm having a wonderful time playing it. However, I struggle with the chat/communicating with other players portion of the game. I've had people whisper to me, but I don't know how to answer the whisperer. The instructions disappear before I can really understand what I'm supposed to do. The chat window? I asked for help in the chat window once and not a single person answered me. I don't know if they didn't see what I put in there or just ignored the new girl.

Also, I've been notified that XXX Player wants to trade with me a couple of times. I have no idea how to do that. The only thing I've been able to successfully do when interacting with another player is duel....which I lost dismally. What I'm saying here is that some of us cute little noobs aren't ignoring you. We aren't sure how to respond to you.

You know, its fine to help people and stuff, I like doing that, too, from time to time, even if its just answering someones question in chat or quickly crafting something.

Although reading the post makes me scratch my head.
The Person most likely didnt understand you in the first place (accepting group invites happens in everyones own language).

And the whole post doesnt sound like you laugh WITH that person, but more of belittle him/her.
Constantly saying "poor", "poor little", " it's cute and sad", "Adorably terribly newbies" or last sentence "I wonder if she's ever once talked to anyone in-game? So cute." , it all sounds like your laughing at the person, and also feel great because you know how that "please kick me from group immediately" Bow ability is not an optimal ability for pve (although this was some public dungeon anyway).

So next time you share a story - no matter if you intentionally wrote it like that because your ego needed a boost, or because you simply didnt notice that it sounded mean - please do so in a way, the other person could laugh with you, when visiting the forums.

I know, despite what some of those who think it's crazy to be nice to people here on the forums think. The trick to whispering people is to type /r before typing the response. Or to initiate a whisper type /w charactername, or weirdly /w @name (but no comma) which is confusing as hell.

Hit "N" to look at the Notifications where you can accept a trade offer.

If you're on console I honestly can't help, but someone here can. There are helpful people around, just be persistent and ignore people making fun of you. They're ***.

I have a friend who has played for 2 years and basically never notices my /w. In fact I did zone-wise red text /y at him from 1 inch away while dancing and on fire (a memento) and he in all seriousness didn't notice. Yesterday I ran into 2 level 20 characters trying to take down that big elemental thing in Stormhaven. I couldn't solo it and I was waiting for others, but they were doing such low damage so one hit from me aggroed it. They were taking naps constantly. I wondered what they were doing all the way in this zone at level 20. But suddenly about 8 other similar level characters showed up. It took them a good 10 minutes to take it down with hits from me once in a while, but it was quite amazing.

I wasn't laughing at or with this person but more for them. I remember what it was like stating out!

I really do wonder whether that person had ever spoken to anyone in-game. As @CMFan1966 can attest this game explains practically nothing in-game! In fact, even more baffling, there's things you can't possibly know exist until you stumble upon them.

The secret chest which spawns only from an obscure combination of gems put into sconces in the overland of Craglorn. Did you know about that? So far as I know the only reason anyone knows is one guy was so curious about it back in the day that he spent a week monkeying with it. I still don't even know what to call it but I've observed him summoning the boss.

Or towns that have vendors when your alliance controls them in Cyrodiil. A non-PvPer could even somehow stumble across those towns but, if they happen to be controlled by another alliance, how would you guess you can buy purple jewelry from them for AP. How do you get AP?

[snip] Granted, tone online in text is a harder thing to interpret than in speech but you, too, are reacting due to insecurities and are welcome to mute me and never again read anything I write. [snip]

If we lose the ability to be kind to one another due to joking it's the worst thing I can think of. [snip]

So according to the forum, when a player is bad:

    - Offer your help!
    - Don't offer your help!
    - Don't remove him/her from your group!
    - Don't play together with them!

    Yeah...

And to OP, it's possible that this person didn't speak a word of english and had no clue what you were saying all the time. Happenes to me really often. For example, I explain boss mechanics, the group wipes after ignoring them, and after I ask everyone personally if they understand me, I get something like "im russia" as an answer...

Sure, me too. Today I've had three low level Japanese players walk up and hit the Group request on me when entering a dungeon. Literally being unable to communicate with those around you seems to have inspired them to be more bold. In my case it worked as they seemed happy to go wherever I happened to be going.

    By default you are in
    /say
    mode

    i normally hit....
    .
to move me from the UI to the chatbox control
..then click in the textbox and write...
    /zone
    and enter

Once you do that your are in zone mode and will be able to speak to everyone in zone rather than just the local people around you with /say.

You can also use the mouse to right click on any name in the textbox....this will give you various options to click on.
You can also right click on any player in game to get various options.

Question... did he/she ask for help ? (I assume not, since he/she did not communicate with you).

Then... why did you want to "help" ?

Don't try to help people who don't want or need to be helped.
Not everyone wants to play the way you play (i.e. nuke down mobs efficiently). Play and let play.

I really wonder if some people's greatest fun in this game is to judge others (and call it "helping", and write about it on forums on top of that).

This, also do not help unless you want to help for the sake of helping not so you can feel important because you know the game better. PEOPLE do not like that period and can sense that attitude.

I've gotten more help in this thread I believe than in any other I've read. Thank you for taking time to explain some of this stuff to me. The hack and slash and magic them to death part is easy...ok easier...if you've played some of the other Elder Scrolls games. The social aspect of it? Not so much. Especially if I'm trying to handle the social stuff at the same time I'm trying not to get dead. ;)

I would love to communicate better with other players but even with text chat now on console this can be difficult - need to save up for a PS4 keyboard thingy as otherwise just takes too damn long to open, shift cursor about & type & send. And I frequently type a message & mistakenly delete it before I send. :/

took me a while to work it out. Same for trading. Some sort of guide for console might help people.

Am quite shy when playing (getting better) so much so am loathe to even ask for help from the guilds I belong to. So would not mind someone asking if I need help. :)

Poor little thing. So that's one stamina skill slotted on a full medium armor toon.

At first I tried to talk to her and offer to craft some set armor for free since despite being CP 140 or so it was clearly mismatched stuff picked up off the ground. Didn't appear to notice I was talking to her. Thought I'd at least make the offer.

She ended up in the dungeon I happened to be doing a daily in so I invited her to Group. Never did seem to realize I was chatting with her, despite addressing her by name. In Group chat. No self heals. Aggroed basically anything and everything without seeming pattern of direction. Any USB (or bluetooth) keyboard should work...no need for a fancy PS4 thingy.

I've used both a wireless usb keyboard and a bluetooth. USB is easier to setup (plug it in, and away you go). Probably cheaper as well.

You're a good one runagate. I love people like you who want to help and do whenever you can. I still remember one of my very first days in Everquest, my very first MMO, I was bewildered and lost and confused and I ran straight off Kelethin with my newbie woodelf and lost my corpse somewhere below. A very kind bard took 15 minutes out of her day to run around with me and find it and that stuck with me, she was so sweet. I try to help where I can, if I see someone waiting on a dolmen or world boss I'll wait with them so they have some backup when they choose to start the fight and if it's just a few of us, I switch to my heal spec. The casual grouping is one of the things I love the most about ESO. I had a wonderful experience a couple of weeks ago where I was questing with my NB, and came across a Templar who was on the same step of the quest, so we just.. quested together. There were few words, but she waited for me and I waited for her and it worked out well, it was fun and I look forward to those experiences. I just wish sometimes people would stick around after a tough fight long enough for a quick /thank or /cheer rather than immediately running off to the next thing, blind to the people who helped them.

On the other hand, there was that moment yesterday when I was fighting off a village, and someone on a horse ran in and stole the thieves trove I was trying to get to (irony). Those people can go jump in a lake of fire for all I care. :)

Hmm. I am 160 and I use that bounce back skill. Morphed it into a self heal, critical for pve. I haven't run dungeons yet though. Should I not use it in groups?

I haven't trained in dw yet (levelled it, just haven't put skills points in and practiced) so my self heals are limited to that (bounce back) and potions pretty much atm.

    To answer your questions seriously:

    2) the only decent self-heal available to bow/dual wield is Vigor which you get from pvp... the dual wield self-heal from Slashes is semi-ok in some situations and using a skill to keep enemies away from you solo questing is a great idea! it also is definitely not a pertinent group skill but at CP 160 it doesn't much matter yet and you'll learn as you ask questions and we cruelly and mockingly answer them like we know all along

With the exception of Stam Sorc, in which case Vigor is a waste of a slot as crit surge and rendering slashes is all the healing you'll ever need......

The jib prob references her stance against the social welfare (the inference being helping) state. Reaganomics likely just refers to trickle down economics in the context used...? Maybe. Meaning help the rich and the benefit will trickle down to the poor.

TLDR - you are being accused of a lack of empathy and compassion.

You're factually correct, but the intention is incorrect.

The poster in question's approach to others posting their experiences in any light with newbies seems to be "don't offer to help them" which is almost anathema in a MMO, hence my questioning of whether their beliefs revolve around individualism rather than the collective where the desire to help is normally stronger.

Sure some people laugh at newbies and do so on these forums, but to tar everyone with the same brush is to attack the social core of the game and do more damage than the "kool kids".

Sometimes there's people that are so new to playing computer games it's cute and sad.

I ran into a poor tiny bosmer just now. Dying horribly to 2 of those pirhana flower things by a wayshrine. Skills uses: lots of bow light attacks, agony (I had to log on a NB to see the name of this skill, I forgot not just mobs can cast this), entropy (!?) and that awful bow skill that bounces enemies back away from you I think it's called "please kick me from group immediately." Poor little thing.

I told her if she ever notices that I'm talking to her to /w me sometime and we could adventure together. I love people like that. I wonder if she's ever once talked to anyone in-game? So cute.

Sounds to me you were trying to get the attention of a female. Nothing more nothing less, if it was a guy you would've just laughed at him for a sec and then moved on.

Male @name, female character name, and you don't know my gender. Learn to read.

I've read and you sound like a whiny, needy person.
"Why is she ignoring my texts?"
    "Why won't she listen" etc.
Then you belittle them for not chatting with you.

One more thing to consider. A slower player might not be a noob. They might be handicapped: http://forums.mmorpg.com/discussion/458587/disabled-gamers-in-mmo-games-and-not-only. Just best to be polite. Not saying OP was not being helpful. General thought.

I wonder if I now radiate the aura of a newbie.

I mean, I'll always be a newbie at heart, but I've upped the ante by ditching the meta DW/Bow build and gone with 2x DW. I keep on activating the wrong skills (muscle memory!), failing to swap bars, and generally looking stupid wondering why my attacks aren't firing off.

If any of you see me out there mucking things up, do stop by and give it a hearty laugh

Even though I'm a veteran of PC gaming, I was exactly that kind of player my first months in ESO. I was a Magicka Sorcerer wearing Heavy armor and Dual Wielding, yet somehow I managed to accomplish the main story questline. As I got a third of way through Cadwell's Silver I started to actually figure out how to play a MagSorc by equipping a Staff and Light Armor. :p

This thread looks rather despising toward new players, as if you aren't pleased there are some.

The funniest players imo are the vets who come to kill your mobs for no reason, just to show off their might, those you see again destroyed in a random dungeon for having pulled everything and mistook/misclik with their sequence <<< rofl :D
