Just curious if I should even bother with Thaumaturge in my Magicka Nightblade build? Does it help with my Elemental Blockade or any of our mainstream rotation moves? Why are some NB's putting lots of points into it?
Meh, I can get my cripple up to 22k with thermaturge and it still hits like a noodle. Consider pointing points into shattering blows or spell erosion. In pvp, Since 90% of the players are running some form of shield and the other 10% are squishy NBs, shattering blow makes sense. I do a lot of damage with my funnel health with shattering blows. Unfortunately, NB dots are very weak in this game. Burst is everything.

It depends on what environment in you're in. Pve, dots are awesome. Pvp, you need burst damage. I'd put about 10-20 points into Thaumaturge, but the rest in magic-based damage tree. If you use a variety of dots (elemental blockade, crippling grasp, maleific wreath, lotus fan, entropy, and others), and buff your damage with Minor Beserk (grim focus) and Major Sorcery, your deeps will be good.

I should've clarified I'm 100% PvE and I use Crippling Grasp, blockade, entropy and path quite a bit. I'm wearing 5 TBS, 2 Grothdarr and the Aether Jewelry set if it makes any difference. I currently have zero points into Thaumaturge and didn't want to experiment by respeccing only to find out it wasn't worth it and have to pay to respec back lol
~44 points into Thaumaturge is currently ideal with the 561 CP cap.
