By the main quest, people mean the quest line that The Prophet gives you.
Now, as for the Main Quest for your alliance zones, you can do those together, regardless of alliance and level. I had just wanted to clarify in case you were slightly confused.

With one Tamriel, you can play and group with friends regardless of lvl and alliance EXCEPT:

    1) you cannot play together to do Solo Quests (such as the Main quest, and the Mages and Fighters Guild quests).
    2) Also, you won't be able to play together in PvP (Cyrodiil) if not from the same alliance.

The wayshrines for each first zone in each alliance is unlocked. Simply group up, and use the Travel To Player function ;) you'll then be ported to a wayshrine closest to your friend.

This ability to go anywhere anytime is recent. There are boats that allow you to go to the 3 starting cities. Quickest way to get to to each other is via travel to friend - this will take you to the waypoint closest to your friend. Advantage is you don't need to have found that waypoint yourself. If one of you standing next to the waypoint your friend will not even have to search for you on the map. Just make sure either friends, in same guild or grouped (grouped allows you to see each other on the map)

You can play in any zone you'd like from the start regardless of faction. Main quests often has solo portions but you can still do those in tandem.

You can quest with anyone from any faction including Main faction quests-- however, Mage's, Fighter's and Main (Harborage) are all solo quest lines

Yes, it is possible! You can group with them or add them to your friend list, right-click on their names (or the equivalent on console) and teleport to them.

    Main quest is solo, though.

Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

The main quest is mostly solo, so no, you can't share that. You can't even enter the Harborage in any of the other alliances.

Anything else sort of works cross faction ...

So you guys say that my friend can join from another alliance to quest with me but only for optional quests. For the main story he can not join. Just to be sure because he is playing in Daggerfall Covenant and I am in Ebonheart Pact. So someone will have to leave the area and move to the other factions map and not sure how to because last time I have read the forums it was without the Tamriel Unlimited expansion you can only move to these areas on lvl 50.
