dps measuring question

Howdy, I use the combat metrics addon, on my healer I noticed that when fighting trash mobs in groups of three or more, combat metrics shows my dps gets around 20k, but on single target, like bosses, it drops to barely 10k or lower. I see people in chat sometimes brag about their 20-40k dps numbers and am wondering do most people base their dps numbers when fighting the trash mobs or when fighting bosses? Trying to figure out what my actual dps is, thanks for the help.

Don't worry about dps when you're healing! However, there are indeed players that can reach 40k/50k+ dps single target.

You should base it on single target results.

The best way to measure your max dps is with a tank tanking aggro and a healer healing you, on a BOss who doesn't teleport around too much and throw too many red circles. There's a Boss on one of the pledges which is often used -but I can't remember the delve's name or BOss. (I use the croc in wayrest 1).

IF you're healing and your scoring 10k on single target - then I'd say your doing OK. Your main job is to heal, after all. For a DD in a vet dungeon a higher score would be preferable

Most people brag on mobs dps, specially with FTC or Lui addons. Some bosses are very dynamic and is hard to keep a constant damage output, some others are static, so DPS varies in each situation.

You have to also take the exaggeration factor into account on whether they hit 40k consistently on every single target boss without ideal conditions and a good team.

I'd echo @ConeOfSilence here, there is exaggeration factor with most DPS figures

Most DPS in a normal 4 man are looking at about 20k, in trials 20-30k due to the increased number of buffs and debuffs, on a single target.

you will get some between 30-50k who have there rotation to perfection and are in a great group.

So 10K as a healer is fine, unless of course your tank is dead because your to busy DPS'ing to heal or run out of resources.

I'm happy to, in my conditions, get between 32~39k against The Warrior in Hel Ra Citadel.

Too bad this doens't seem enough to make me eligible for a vMoL group

If people brag because of their 50k DPS on mobs, they are doing it wrong

I only brag about my DPS on mobs if I get like 200k AOE dps, and I only do it among friends.

Combat Metrics.

Tracks damage over the whole fight, DPS per mob, damage sources & types (Dot or direct damage, element...), tracking of all buffs / debuffs, and allows you to post DPS on boss & adds at the same time.

FTC / Lua extended / ... are much simpler and readable, but provide much less data. That being said, nothing prevents you from having both.

I would suggest there's probably more going on.

But for the OP I'd recommend FTC or similar for measuring your actual DPS. CombatMetrics, unless they've changed it, can be a bit odd sometimes with numbers. Also, it's common practice to post dps numbers in chat from addons like FTC (sucks if you're on console) to proof the claims people make. Also helps the leaders to see who needs help or who is outstanding.

I got FTC i think but all i seen was numbers all over my screen grrrr it was horrible. Is the other addon the same like that?

That's called scrolling combat text / cloud text and you can turn it off. Completely unrelated to the actual DPS meter. Same goes for other addons that feature a DPS meter, although combat metrics is explicitly a DPS meter afaik.

I don't know... I really don't wanna think it's something personal.

I can't participate in those late-at-night allegedly "core" runs, but yesterday there was a group in a good period of time for me that was... arranged silently it seems. I felt bad, of course, but let's move on. I don't want to polute OP's thread.
